I know I should know where to find this by now, seeing how I've GM'ed for years, but what do the availability codes mean for various items? In particular weapons and portable computers and such.
For example, a Zeison Sha Discblade has:
Availability: 4, X
What is 4 and what is X? And what if the X is lower-case (as I have seen in places).

The details on equipment availability can be found on the following pages;
Star Wars RPG Revised & Expanded book, page 263
Star Wars REUP PDF, page 336
I'm not sure what pages in the other editions, I don't have them to
hand right now.
on the specifics;
4 means its a rare item that is difficult to find anywhere.
X means the item is illegal almost everywhere.
I would think that the lower case x is just a typo, as there is no lower case version listed in the offical WEG info.
hope this helps

The availability code is split into 2 groups.
1 Readily available throughout the known galaxy.
2 Normally available only in large cities and space ports, or on
the item's planet of origin.
3 Specialized item, normally only available on item's planet of
origin.
4 Rare item, difficult to obtain anywhere.
The lettering lets you know if anything special (fees, permits etc) is needed for it
F Fee or permit often required for purchase.
R Restricted item on most planets and normally may not be
sold without a license.
X Illegal on most planets. Possession and use generally violates
Imperial, New Republic or local laws except for specially authorized
individuals. Penalties for use of such an item are often severe.
Now some items are a mixed bag. Like say its listed 2f or r, meaning it can be just a fee on some planets while on others it will be restricted. _________________ Confucious sayeth, don't wash cat while drunk! |

I see an opportunity for me here to rewrite some rules the way I like them _________________ The only words of explanation you need for any concept in the entire Star Wars universe are the words Science Fiction and Space Opera. |

I actually took a closer look at the codes and decided that they're pretty inclusive. The letter codes could use one or two more, but that's hardly a reason to rechart the whole thing. It's not Space Pulp! _________________ The only words of explanation you need for any concept in the entire Star Wars universe are the words Science Fiction and Space Opera. |

I did feel there should be a rating between F and R.. P (permits required, usually military, merc or bounty hunters).. _________________ Confucious sayeth, don't wash cat while drunk! |

I thought that was covered under F... Fee or Permit required. _________________ "I've Seen Your Daily Routine. You Are Not Busy!"

What's funny is that there is no code for stuff that doesn't have some kind of regulation. Like...a jacket or shoes... would be... what? 1F? Or just 1? |

You guys want to add some codes? I hereby add "M" for current or former military equipment. _________________ The only words of explanation you need for any concept in the entire Star Wars universe are the words Science Fiction and Space Opera. |

My brief rule of thumb for using these is to multiply costs by the number. _________________ "I've Seen Your Daily Routine. You Are Not Busy!"

I think F (one-time fee) and P (permit) should be divided, and C for continuous fee. G is good for registration often required, I like M for military in origin, L for license required, R frequently restricted, X stays the same, XX is something like the Sun Crusher or a portable weapon of some kind which is very good at killing massive amounts of people.
In other words:
F - weapon is subject to a one-time fee (generally at or before purchase)
C - weapon is subject to repeated fees (ex: re-registration)
P/L - you need a permit or license to own the weapon (oftentimes this requires education)
G - this weapon needs to be registered with whatever authorities on a majority of worlds
M - weapon is military in origin (this may be a problem in some systems)
R - weapon is restricted access only on a majority of worlds (these tend to be military also and are never for sale at a legitimate retailer)
X - the weapon is illegal on a majority of worlds, and you will most likely get in big trouble if you are caught with one
XX - same as above, except change "get in big trouble" to "be executed or imprisoned for life"
EDIT: I just realized I am severely off-topic here, discussing House Rules... _________________ The only words of explanation you need for any concept in the entire Star Wars universe are the words Science Fiction and Space Opera. |

I like those expanded lists. Also i could see a cat for "if owned by the race which makes them, no permit(s) needed, if owned by any other race, permits needed with yearly re-registration or the like.. _________________ Confucious sayeth, don't wash cat while drunk! |

We could add this?:
O - free of ownership permissions on world of origin
They can't be too specific, or else we'll sit here splitting them until the cows come home. I think ten or less would be optimal. _________________ The only words of explanation you need for any concept in the entire Star Wars universe are the words Science Fiction and Space Opera. |
