Well, saw the new preview for Rogue one during the Olympics, and it CERTAINLY looked like an ISD was hovering over a plateau in that preview! _________________ Confucious sayeth, don't wash cat while drunk! |

I was kind of surprised myself. _________________ __________________________________

ISDs have been established in canon as being able to move slowly in an atmosphere as well as hover above cities ever since the initial tv-movie "Spark of Rebellion" for Star Wars Rebels. _________________ Don Diestler

It certainly seems that way..
So anyone wanna jerry up some atmospheric stats (speed and ranges on weapons) for it? _________________ Confucious sayeth, don't wash cat while drunk! |

Wookieepedia gives SW Rebels: Head to Head as a source for 975 kmh as the atmospheric speed for an Imperial I ISD. I think that's overly optimistic, given as the ISD probably flies like a brick - though a brick with immense thrust - and the aerodynamics that comes with that territory.
Come to think of it, most ships or atmospheric fighters in Star Wars go unreasonably slow. The NASA Hyper-X program managed to have their drone achieve Mach 10 at 40 000 feet, so an atmospheric fighter designed for the job should easily clear Mach 5 or so at any altitude.
Maneuverability? Well, it's a mile long at any rate, so "dead bantha" comes to mind. Not that it needs to do anything more than just hover over stuff in order to target it. |

WEG's 2E Atmosphere Speed for a Capital Ship with a Space of 6 is 330; 950 kmh, so the Wookieepedia article isn't too far off from what it would have if we just tacked on an equivalent speed from the RAW.
And remember that the "950 kmh" is the ship's All-Out speed... _________________ "No set of rules can cover every situation. It's expected that you will make up new rules to suit the needs of your game." - The Star Wars Roleplaying Game, 2R&E, pg. 69, WEG, 1996.

Also, note that this is a subsonic velocity. The speed of sound at sea level is ~1225 km/h and ~1091 km/h at 30,000 ft (just over 9 km). Cruising speed for a Space 6 ISD in atmosphere would be around 237.5 km/h (or just under 150 mph). This is roughly analogous to a modern prop-driven Cessna. _________________ "No set of rules can cover every situation. Could you imagine the sonic cone an ISD would produce hitting Mach 1!!! _________________ Confucious sayeth, don't wash cat while drunk! |

That would be quite impressive. However, going strictly by the RAW, a ship would have to have an absolute minimum Space of 9 to go supersonic in atmosphere. The Space 8 X-Wing comes very close (1,050 km/h, 41 km/h short of the 1,091 km/h speed of sound at 9+ kilometers altitude), but not quite close enough.
Of course, seeing as how the speed threshold decreases with altitude, plus the fact that capital ships would be switching over to their main drives once they reach high altitude, means it is theoretically possible.
Of course, in a society that has mastered anti-grav tech, the need to achieve and maintain orbital velocity is practically non-existent so long as the ship in question has a functioning drive... _________________ "No set of rules can cover every situation. True, but as BSG showed us, a ship's sonic boom can really disrupt stuff down below!! _________________ Confucious sayeth, don't wash cat while drunk! |

No argument there. There just isn't really a way in the RAW to do it. _________________ "No set of rules can cover every situation. It's expected that you will make up new rules to suit the needs of your game." - The Star Wars Roleplaying Game, 2R&E, pg. 69, WEG, 1996.
