Hows about instead of passive, scan, search, yadda yadda just 2 settings:
passive: 20-40/0D-1D
focus: 60-100/1D-3D
with variations based on scanner quality. Every D of bonus dice adds to opposing scanner rolls to detect.
passive scans are 360 degrees. Focus scans are single fire arcs. |

Sounds fine to me. I say it depends on how big a role scanners play in your campaign/adventure/setting/play style.
If one of the players is a signals intelligence expert or a communications technician, you'd probably want to add MORE detail to the scanning rules... short of that, whatever serves the story best. |

True. For base level rules, just having passive and active might do ya. But i know quite a few players who have their characters focus a lot on sensors (and comms) to help out in combat doing things such as
A) picking out which ship(s) have a weak spot (such as in shields or hull)
B) picking out which spot on a ship a specific person/item they are searching for may be so if they hit it they don't take the goal out
C) screwing OVER enemy sensors/comms by jamming etc.. _________________ Confucious sayeth, don't wash cat while drunk! |
