Howdy -
I wanted to start a quick discussion about the conversion pricing of the D20/SAGA starship modification equipment, and what people's thoughts are - especially anyone who might have had a direct hand in converting the material from D20 to D6.
I'm compiling all the starship modifications in one place from all of the different systems (D6/D20/SAGA/FFG), and trying to get a holistic picture of starship modification and gear, and I've found some pretty significant inconsistencies.
For starters, the weights and prices of the gear converted to D6 from D20/SAGA are very, very different. Some things are different by as much as 1000% of price/weight, and I'm trying to get a better understanding of why these things were not converted more directly across, so I can gleam a formula for the conversion of future material.
Anyone have any insight into this? |

I think it was Fallon Kell... or maybe atgxtg who put together a modification system for starships... might have just been starship wweapons...
In any case, its somewhere in the tools and I think it works quite well. I know it's not a d20-->D6 conversion, but maybe you'll like it better? I certainly do. |

I did a lot of those SAGA to D6 conversions a long time ago. Would you mind posting some examples of some of the wonky conversions by price/weight?
I remember having to make some tough calls sometimes, and some things that didn't work out as well as I'd like, especially as they got into using hard points. Though I thought I'd been a little more consistent than that. A couple of examples may jog the memory as to where things may have gone awry. _________________ __________________________________

For sure!
BTW, I completely appreciate the work done on these. Many of the minor inconsistencies are only coming about now, because I've aggregated all these stats - from BOTH systems - into the same place. 'Twas bound to happen!
Here are some examples: (SAGA/D6 Conversion)
Plasma punch (25,000 / 5,000)
Plasma torch (6,000 / 4,500)
Sensor decoy (2,000 / 13,000 or 7,500)
Reinforced keel (4,000 / 3,000)
Some, however, I will note are dead on - HoloNet transciever, luxury upgrade, workshop module, etc.
There is the additional confusion that many of the Availabilities do not match (for example, reinforced keel is Abailability 2 in D6, but Military-only in SAGA). And while the "Emplacement Points" don't have to match weight 1:1 (they're different, but the ARE related), I would still expect them to be somewhat corollary. Or am I wrong in that there really is no connection? That would be a shame - I'd love to be able to extrapolate at least a little of the weight info from Emplacements. Same as with Hard Points from FFG's system.
Anyway, I'd love to follow your thoughts some and see if I can understand the conversion process a little better.
Thanks! |

Ok so maybe 1000% was hyperbole .
But still, it puts me in an interesting headspace. Namely, that as new material has come out (and continues to do so) for the D20 and later FFG series, which covers an increasingly-retconned EU, some basic stuff about how the universe operates has fallen out of sync with the WEG era, pre-EU thinking.
One of my goals has been to holistically retrofit all of the modern Star Wars rpg elements, D20 and SAGA included, into one set of functional rules and stats, and I've been mostly successful. One area, however, where that might cause dissonance is the substitution (rather than conversion) of stats from D20.
An example of this is, say, when a source in D20 says a piece of equipment functions in manner X, it's quick and easy to say that we will instead use the older D6 version that functions in manner Y, and write it off as separate game functions. Unfortunately, since Lucas had become increasingly focused on internal canon, it is much more likely that everything coming out now (FFG included) will be moving forward with function X, and D6 can either update that function or be left to the side.
This is much less a combative stance, and much more a philosophical debate about methods of updating. I'm curious as to everyone's thoughts.
Also, I in no way intend to invalidate the fantastic job members here have done in converting the D20 material, upon which much of my research is based. |

I am so sorry that this has fallen off my radar. I've started a new job and I've been trying to keep up with a writing deadline on the side. I'm not trying to blow you off, though I am having a hard time making time for going back through and checking to see what (or even if) I was thinking at the time.
Hopefully I can make room sometime this weekend. _________________ __________________________________
