Working on a tramp freighter campaign circa 5 years after Revenge of the Sith, wherein the enigmatic captain is actually exiled royalty from a powerful but corrupt core world dynasty. After his banishment he became a free trader, then was recruited by Imperial intelligence. Now he uses his Imperial contacts and his unwitting crew to wage a personal vendetta against his evil father, who is obsessed with resurrecting a Sith demon rumored to have been entombed deep in their home world's plasma core. The tramp crew are criminal specialists and serve as the perfect pawns. With every secret they uncover they are drawn deeper into the game of intergalactic intrigue. All the while chipping away at the secret identity of their oft absent captain.
The captain is an NPC mastermind, and in some circumstances the villain... In other instances the deus ex machina. From his point of view his maniacal father and corrupt noble house are a greater evil than the Empire, an assessment that causes him much uncertainty over time. Ultimately I think it's best for the adventurers to maintain doubt as to his motives and true identity, never fully solving the meta-plot until the final sessions.
