An old adventure of mine I had ran for a while in the Star Wars Roleplaying Club, this was dubbed the "Tellandorf Deployment" before I decided to expand upon it, with the creative assistance of a fellow player/GM. It became the Karlien Sector sourcebook project, which was about 50% complete before RL sneaked in. I'll be posting up bits and pieces of it here if anyone is interested.

A beautiful ocean covered world dotted with jungle-covered archipelagos and coastal beaches, Tellandorf (belonging to the Tellandorf star system) sits along the edge of the Karlien Sector, bordered by the Reddlin Sector. Situated in the Mid Rim roughly five hundred light years from the Roche star system and the Perlemian Trade Route, it takes three days travel in hyperspace from the Roche Asteroid Field to reach planet Tellandorf. At present, the border with the Imperial Dominion graces the 30 light year gap between Tellandorf in the Independent/Republic-allied Karlien Sector and the Pillidan star system in the Imperial Dominion-controlled Reddlin Sector.

Tellandorf was colonized nearly four hundred years ago by human settlers from several Core Worlds, hoping to escape both the bureaucracy and expense of the center of the Old Republic. While possessing bountiful oceans teeming with aquatic life and islands covered with fruit-laden jungles, the world lacked many of the valuable resources necessary for the colony to establish a solid economic base. For most of its history, Tellandorf was regarded as a backwater world, ignored by traders and the galactic government alike, and a good portion of the population left for greener pastures.

Forty years ago, an expedition to Dalta, the fourth planet in the system, discovered moderate (but valuable) deposits of carbonite. Word spread to other worlds in the sector and nearby sectors, and soon prospectors and miners alike poured into the system. The discovery team who began selling claims used much of their initial profit to establish the Tellandorf Expeditionary Mining Company. Miners and prospectors began to spend their downtime on Tellandorf, funneling money into the economy. The large amount of this added income in turn was invested into the Tellandorf Tourism Cooperative for the day that necessary transition away from mining would occur.

When the Empire rose to power, Tellandorf and its mining venture quickly aligned with the Imperial Mining Guild. Knowing it would cut sharply into the planetary economy, the Tellandorf government in turn wanted to be spared of Imperial influence. Aside from possessing a local governor and small Army garrison, the world was largely left alone, the Empire being unconcerned with a strategically unimportant world.

After the death of the Emperor, the Empire abandoned the world altogether, relocating its few ground forces to more important positioning. While not aligning themselves completely with the New Republic, Tellandorf welcomed diplomats shortly after the fall of Coruscant and signed a compact of free association, adapting the New Republic credit as its currency and sharing many of its laws and policies.

Today, a good amount of Dalta's carbonite deposits have been tapped out, forcing the TEMC to dig deeper into the crust. But as a result, Tellandorf now possesses a thriving tourist base, and has become a prime vacation spot in the sector. Now being adjacent to the current Borderland Regions of the Republic and Imperial Dominion has forced Tellandorf's government to consider the possibility of an Imperial invasion and has dramatically increased their defense spending on Defense Force procurement and expansion. The brass of the Tellandorf Defense Force believe its not enough, and have urged the Prime Minister to request military support from the New Republic.

Mesca City was once known as Mescan Settlement, the first colony established on Tellandorf approximately 359 years before the Battle of Yavin, most of its settlers hailed from Esseles, Raltiir, Brentaal and other heavily-settled worlds in the Core. Paraded as the perfect opportunity for colonists to start a new life away from the overpopulated Core, an large influx of settlers made Mescan Settlement into a boomtown of sorts, luring both the lawful and the unscrupulous. Boasting a sunny, tropical climate and sitting just off-shore from the world's massive ocean, the settlement seemed like paradise; an ideal place to live.

As the first few decades passed since the initial colonization, the lack of abundant natural resources and the world's considerable distance from the larger hyperlines began to isolate the world as traders, corporations, and even the Republic steered clear of it. Mescan Settlement's population shrank along with the planet at large and soon, less than 50,000 colonists remained from a population of over one million. Most of them being subsistance farmers, it seemed little could be done to prevent the inevitable. While the planetary population slowly grew over three centuries, few traders or off-worlders came to Tellandorf or the settlement. Most of the Karlien Sector's navigational charts neglected to even list it, to the point where a Republic scouting expedition mistakenly re-surveyed the world, until the scouts stumbled upon Mescan Settlement. Of course, they too left promptly.

But the downward trend for the Mescan Settlement would end. 40 years ago, independent miners (both of off-world and Tellandorf descent) made a survey of the fourth planet in system, Dalta. A surprising discovery was made by Captain Davis Borrell: moderate, but valuable veins of carbonite were discovered close to a lengthy crevasse in the side of the barren world. The mining party established a joint claim with the Tellandorf settlements and founded the Tellandorf Expeditionary Mining Company. In a matter of weeks, prospectors from across the Rim and the Karlien Sector at large poured into the system, making their own stakes on Dalta and funneling much needed credits into Tellandorf's fledgling economy.

In less than a decade, the planet's population swelled from just 600,000 to over 14 million as the colonization boom proceeded, giving the world a new lease of existance. The resulting expansion prompted the formation of a planetary government based on the parliamentary democratic model, as well as a defense force to protect the world and its mining interests from rivals and piracy. Mescan Settlement became the capital of Tellandorf, hosting both the Parliament and the Defense Force, and underwent major changes. Spanning over most of the southern half of the island and home to a population of over two million beings, the local government began to invest heavily in its image, promoting itself as not only a fresh start for eager colonists, but as a vacation spot for those who want to get away and enjoy themselves. The Parliament of Tellandorf knew that the carbonite reserves on Dalta wouldn't last forever and that mining efforts would become considerably more expensive as the operations moved deeper into the planetary crust. The Tellandorf Tourism Cooperative was founded by both the Parliament and the TEMC, which would receive a significant portion of the carbonite mining projects and in turn, reinvest them into the world's tourism companies and promotions. Taking a more modern step, Mescan Settlement was renamed to Mesca City.

The fall of the Republic and the rise of the Galactic Empire that followed it brought a different era to the aquatic world and its capital city. Many mining companies, including the galaxy-wide Independent Mining Guild, were either nationalized or aligned themselves outright with the Empire. Knowing that going into the Imperial fold would cut sharply into their profits, Parliament nevertheless passed legislation that aligned the TEMC with the Imperial Mining Guild, preferring cooperation and limited self-government to defiance and brutal occupation. Mesca City housed both the small Army Garrison (whose remnants were merged into the TGDF base nearby later) and the Imperial Governor, for a period of time that would last up until the aftermath of the Battle of Endor.

Following the death of the Emperor, both the Army garrison and the Governor withdrew from Mesca City and Tellandorf into the Imperial-controlled Reddlin Sector.

Hot-Spots

Koiza Street

A brief airtaxi ride from Mesca Starport, Koiza Street is the center of nightlife in Mesca City (and perhaps most of Tellandorf itself). Various bars, nightclubs, live houses, holoarcades and gaming parlors (from gravball to holo-shockboxing) and small casinos line the strip. Many of these places are open throughout the evening hours, closing down around daybreak before repeating the cycle once more.

Zawa Brewery and Distillery

The oldest brewery/distillery on Tellandorf, Zawa Brewery and Distillery (or Zawa B&D as it's known to the locals) receives it's namesake from the indiginous fruit that is the primary ingredient in the beverages it creates. Zawa Beer is the most popular brew in the sector, often found in cantinas as far as Karlien and Nattelor, being relatively cheap and rich-tasting make it favorable to beverage enthusiasts as well as the casual drinker. Zawa B&D also produces its own brand name liquor and the non-alcoholic Zawa Juice, but are generally only found on Tellandorf.

Bosco's

Location:

Bosco's is located east of Mesca City on planet Tellandorf, a world which sits along the outside of the Karlien Sector and directly across from the New Republic-Imperial Dominion Borderland Region. It consists of a small beach-side bar surrounded by sand-molded concrete walls, just outside of the east gate of Mesca Fighter Base, located due south of Mesca Starport. Directly east is the Mesca Paradise Resort, another popular locale in the area for tourists and civilians alike.

History:

Some fifteen standard years ago, an NCO by the name of Bosco Reinhart retired from the Tellandorf Ground Defense Force after twenty years of military service. The Empire's presence on his homeworld persisted to be a thorn in the retiree's side, as any locale that became popular with his comrades in their downtime would soon draw the attention of the Imps, who would in turn harass the Defense Force personnel and the bar staff as well.
After several instigated altercations which led to the unlawful arrest of one of Bosco's close friends, the older man had enough. He was determined to establish his own place where his friends and the locals could relax and unwind without the unwanted appearance of Imperial troops. Taking most of the credits he saved for his retirement, Bosco establish his own place, buying the property just outside of Mesca Fighter Base on the beach-side. It started out small, just a wooden shack with some stools and used tables, a fridge and the few brands of brew that Bosco managed to buy or acquire through his TDF buddies. But over time, the bar grew bigger as more and more customers poured in. The holosign "Imperials Not Welcome!" in bright red aurebesh seemed to attract the crowd that Bosco cherished.

Today, some twelve years after the Battle of Endor, the Empire has long deserted Tellandorf... and Bosco's still stands!

Live House by the Beach:

Bringing back old Tellandorf traditions of live music along the beach, Bosco had a stage built during his second renovation, as both a reward to the TDF customers who loved to jam on their downtime, and as a potential lure for an audience. The scheme worked and during the weekends, music groups are hired to play, paid for by a light cover charge at the door during Live Nights. Occasionally, bands have been known to stop by during their tours along the Rim, among them Starbreaker from the Colonies, Dengar and the Bounty Hunters, and several years ago, The Emperor's New Clothes before their final break-up.

Up for a little action in the cockpit?

At the request from several of the pilots and maintainers of the Starfighter Corps (and with the help of more than few donations), eight used simulator pods were procured for the enjoyment of the patrons, each capable of simulating twenty different types of modern-era starfighters. Competitions between TDF and Allied squadrons are common, as well as gambling on those competitions. And speaking of gambling...

Sabacc Leagues:

Although frowned upon by the brass on Mesca Fighter Base, Bosco permits Sabacc tournaments in his establishment, provided that players bring both the decks and the credits to pay their gambling debts. All disputes, however, are settled outside of the establishment.

Security:

Bosco Reinhart's sheer intimidation factor is legendary among Mesca City's residents, should someone actually anger him. Having experienced countless barroom brawls during his own military career, the old man can still wipe the floor with the common drunk and stand toe to toe with the younger infantry grunts. But if at any time the situation should be too much for even Bosco to handle, there are more than enough TDF loyalists on hand to deal with someone causing trouble in their favorite watering hole.

Crowd:

Most of Bosco's regular customers consist of members of the Tellandorf Defense Force, especially the pilots of the Starfighter Corps. Bosco's love of starfighters and dreams of flying endeared him to not only the pilots, but also the enlisted crew chiefs and specialists of the Maintenance Group. A good number of allied flyers and maintainers from across the sector and the region find their way here through comradery. TGDF personnel are also welcome to the bar, and many of them either know or have heard of Bosco Reinhart.

Tourists and the local civilians are tolerated, provided they are respectful to the staff and to the military personnel who frequent the place. But nothing will force the ejection of a patron faster than the admission of being Imperial or expressing loyalty for the Imperial Dominion. The owner has a long, harsh memory of the Empire's tenure on Tellandorf, and his feelings of enmity towards them and their previous treatment of his homeworld will not fade away.

Mesca Fighter Base


Location:

Mesca Fighter Base is located approximately 8 km east of downtown Mesca City and directly south of Mesca City Starport on Tellandorf. The base itself shares Runway 3 with the Starport to help ease light freighter and transport traffic. The base itself is 495 meters in length from west to east (at furthest extent), and 315 meters from north to south in width (at furthest extent). It houses the headquarters of the Tellandorf Defense Force and is a layover point for many Outer Rim patrol squadrons positioned close to the Borderland Regions with the Imperial Dominion. It accommodates 462 support staff and starfighter maintainers, 60 pilots and gunners, and 24 officers in associated career fields. The current base commander is Commander Jonn Randii, designation Prowler Lead.

Planetary Defenses:

The Tellandorf Defense Force:

The Tellandorf Defense Force (TDF) is made up of thousands of volunteers, indigenous and immigrated, that make up a Navy, Starfighter Corps, and Ground Defense Force. The TDF is responsible for the defense of planet Tellandorf, the star system, the mining colonies and operations on Dalta, and the allied systems of the Karlien Sector. The TDF is lead by the SUPCOMDEF (Supreme Commander of the Defense Force), and accountable to the Ministry of Defense under the Office of the Prime Minister.

The Tellandorf Defense Force has acquired most of its fleet and starfighters through private sales or New Republic government auction, as well as the consolidation of nearby systems' defenses forces, such as the Karlien Navy. Unfortunately, many of the ships are outdated, and while more than a match for pirates and/or smuggling vessels, they are generally outclassed by Imperial ships.

Through the Office of the Prime Minister and the Ministry of State, the TDF can request the assistance of the New Republic Defense Force per the Compact of Free Assocation Agreement, should the situation warrant it

Regix Prime controls a narrow corridor past the edge of the nebula. Old Republic scouts cleared this corridor of asteroids and space debris. Since then, the New Republic commanders have dragged back a network of large asteroids, anchored in place by a vast network of tractor beams. These asteroids can be moved to form a mass block that will seal off the hyperspace lanes.

Regix Prime has impressive defenses. It is rumored that only the most powerful turbolasers would have even a remote chance of penetrating its dense armor. Two huge ion cannons dominate its forward pincers, and dozens of heavy turbolaser batteries can be seen along the angled forward surfaces. Two hundred point-defense laser cannons can throw up a wall of fire against incoming enemy fighters.

Most importantly, five huge bulbs can project a tremendously powerful shield in the shape of an octagonal jewel. The planes of the shield have dedicated firing slots, which can themselves be blocked with weaker (but still powerful) shutter shields.

It is rumored that only the Death Star itself could break down the shields of Regix Prime, although this may be as much wishful thinking as fact. Still wilder rumors persist of cloaked minefields, hidden seismic charges, gatling lasers and something darkly referred to as a "vortex gun".

The rear launch bay serves as a miniature starport for Republic operations in the area. The crew facilities are spartan. All enlisted soldiers bunk in rooms with six or more comrades. Junior officers (O-4 and below) have one roommate, senior officers have a small suite. Originally the Verpine simply had everyone sleeping in one large tunnel with a thousand sleeping niches, until their Human companions politely explained the typical need for personal space. This is a great joke among the Verpine, who not only share their thoughts via radio-telepathy, but by extension their dreams.

Fortunately, the Verpine enjoy a good view. The enlisted lounge has a long transparisteel viewport with a spectacular view of the Regix Diad. Several droid bartenders are available. Most are Siak-series protocol droids. "Crunch" gets the most attention, having been built on a recycled IG-series assassin droid chassis. Crunch dispenses drinks out of his right hand; his left fist is a huge double-barreled stun blaster. He has a blender in his chest and a small refrigerator in his belly. A rumor persists among the ground troopers that Garez himself advised on Crunch's construction.
Flexible tunnels and chambers are available for target practice, zero-g entertainment and general carousing. The Verpine also have a huge pile of junk, apparently shipped in weekly from Ugnaught traders, from which they scavenge parts and build experimental starcraft. It is cause for great celebration among the hive when a careless star-jock smashes up a fighter in the asteroid field. Until recently, the Verpine were known to occasionally wish their friends a hard crash with a safe ejection.

This set represents the New Republic Defense Force's presence in the Karlien Sector.

The 54th Borderland Taskforce (NRDF 3rd Fleet)

Made up various newer and older vessels from the Third Fleet of the New Republic Navy, the 54th Borderland Taskforce has been assigned to the Karlien Sector in response to the recent Imperial Dominion invasion of the Nunema system and the several military incursions into the allied system of Tellandorf. The 54th is also a naval experiment in the NRDF, utilizing the starfighter compliments of its core vessels as the primary offensive capability of the taskforce. Should such a strategy prove ineffective, the taskforce can rely on the heavier guns of its line ships and the gunships. It also boasts an Agave-class picket ship for early warning and reconnaissance purposes, as well as an electronic warfare squadron made up of modified K-Wing bombers.

The Taskforce Commander is Rear Admiral Kalam Dessalla, an older male Quarren originating from Dac, and a veteran of the First and Second Battles of Dac. He is a proponent of the Starfighter Projection Initiative, regarded as a tactical genius among his peers and circles in both Naval and Starfighter Command.

The primary port of station for the 54th is planet Karlien, but the taskforce is often patrolling the space lines of the Karlien Sector, especially along the Borderland Regions. The flagship is the NRS Stand Off, a recently-constructed Endurance-class Fleet Carrier, part of the New Class Shipbuilding Program.
