Okay guys I need your opinions on how much data each could hold:
Datapad
Data Cube
Data Crystal
Data Disk
Datacron
Holocron
Mainframes
Droids
I'm going to bee working on a general idea set for Computer Engineering and am looking for a basis. |

Capacity = plot. It isn't a matter of the logical progression of technology but what you want to "see" characters doing with a particular means of storing data. If you wanted to see an entire movie with someone running from chasing imperial stormtroopers while carrying a datapad with the Death Star plans then a datapad can hold at least as much as the entire Death Star Plans. Maybe that's just so you can have all kinds of moments where the datapad gets dropped, or lost, or physically gets handed off, or stolen or...
What you want or need it to handle - it can handle.
For that matter it's established that Leia had all of it on the card she fed into R2. It wasn't that R2's own memory was full of all that data - he was simply PHYSICALLY carrying the card/disc that WAS full of all that data. If that little card/disc can carry all that information then anything larger can carry at least that much as well. |

I suggest looking at Cracken's Rebel Field Guide p. 4-5 for starters. _________________ *

But was what R2 carried, just a copy of schematics, or a full on specification rundown, including schematics, power output/generators, crew mannings, shift schedules and so on? _________________ Confucious sayeth, don't wash cat while drunk! |

Leia and an Death Star officer referred to them as "technical readouts" so I doubt it would have personnel reports, shift schedules and such. _________________ *

Well, from my mil career, there is a big difference from just having schematics, and the whole 'tech manual' for something. Usually the schematics make up for only 1/5th of the entirety of a TM. _________________ Confucious sayeth, don't wash cat while drunk! |

George Lucas didn't have the experience of your mil career, so I still think that "technical readouts" may not have been the whole "manual". It only had to be enough info to show a weakness in the thermal exhaust port system. _________________ *

But "blueprints" for something THAT size pretty much HAVE to include more than just a few lines that show where something is, how big it is, and how far it is from something else. Blueprints for a building under construction in the real world, for example (which I have occasion to interact with a little bit for my job), include power specifications, electrical requirements, reflected ceiling patterns for drop ceiling tiles, minimum requirements for equipment to be installed, planned construction schedules, etc.
Blueprints for a fast food franchise may not be an operating manual that would let you build it and then follow instructions to actually start selling burgers, but it's going to be enough information for people knowledgeable in their fields of study to understand HOW it works, WHY it works - and how to best to make the fry vats explode. It's not going to be just a set of 2D or even 3D drawings. "Technical readouts" would really have to include more. |

I agree that for a battle station the size of a small moon with a super laser powerful enough to blow up terrestrial planets, the technical readouts would still be a very massive computer file. I was just balking at the idea of the plans Artoo carried as having personnel details, custodial schedules and the like. _________________ *

So if it was to be represented in a "gigabyte' form, how big do you think that single data chip was? remember, we have some thumb drives up to 1 Terabyte. Do you think that could contain those plans? _________________ Confucious sayeth, don't wash cat while drunk! |

I got 2gigs of "technical readouts" of the entire blueprints for 4 types of fallout bunkers designered to hold up to 24 people, and like 12 different home architectual blueprints by frank wright. I'm pretty sure that with how modular a space station would be - that could easily fit on like 10-20 gigs
but anyway - ty for the input so far guys. |
