Does anyone have suggestions for the mechanics of Kyber crystals?
How much energy do they funnel?
Does it augment that energy flow in some way?
Does the size of the crystal increase its volatility when focusing energy?
Does it require detailed calibration to control the process?
How much energy and what type of damage, area of effect, and under what circumstances would it explode? _________________ Don Diestler

I say forget the kyber crystal mechanics since what is now considered canon on the crystal is just highly unrealistic. I have always thought that lightsabers could use any kind of force imbued crystal to power it and I have always thought that the empire synthesized the crystals for its super weapons because the size of them would make finding naturally occurring giant crystals nearly impossible. And since the Death Star would need NINE giant kyber crystals for one Death Star, it makes it nearly impossible to find large ones for the second. |

For the upcoming Star Wars Rebels Season One Sourcebook this is what I plan to use.
Quote: | Kyber Crystals
Are Force-attuned crystals found in the ice caves of the planet Ilum, and in the crust of the Outer Rim world Lothal. The crystals were attuned to the Force and used in the construction of lightsabers. As younglings, Jedi traveled to the ice caves to harvest their own crystals, which they then used to build their lightsabers. The Force guided their selection, finding a crystal that matched them as Jedi. Crystals lacked color before they were chosen by a Jedi. Once chosen, most lightsabers became blue or green, though other shades were created in rare instances. The Sith, on the other hand, used red crystals.
During ancient wars between the Jedi and the Sith, in which both sides fought for control over the galaxy, super-weapons were created that were powered by giant kyber crystals. Although these stories were considered legends, a giant kyber crystal was discovered on Utapau during the Clone Wars. The Confederacy of Independent Systems attempted to acquire the crystal, but they were discovered by Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi and Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker. The Jedi were able to destroy the crystal, though Yoda was concerned that Darth Sidious would discover another giant kyber crystal in order to construct another super-weapon.
After the fall of the Galactic Republic and the rise of the Galactic Empire, Sidious—publicly known as Emperor Sheev Palpatine—and his Empire began construction of the Death Star, a battle station capable of destroying entire planets. Kyber crystals were used as part of the Death Star, and the Empire continued to search for new crystals five years before the Battle of Yavin. One such crystal was located by the rebels from Lothal, who discovered its location and destroyed it. The destruction produced a large shockwave, destroying everything in its path.
Game Mechanics:
--The size of a Kyber crystal directly relates to the amount of energy it can focus and augment as well as its volatility.
--Because of the rarity of Kyber crystals the amount of damage, area of effect, and scale is best handled as plot device. The GM is encouraged to create stats they feel are appropriate to the scene and given circumstances.

I would say look at the lowickan Fire gem for ideas, you can find info on them in the truce at bakura source book. You can modify it as necessary.

Star Wars Rebels Season One Sourcebook without art at this time its 142 pages long. It currently includes the 13 episodes of the season, tv movie and the four shirts. It will also include information from the current books "A New Dawn" (paperback out in 3 weeks), "Ezra’s Gamble" (notes complete), "Servants of the Empire: Edge of the Galaxy" (just started reading), and "The Rebellion Begins" (the first 30+ pages are prequel to Spark of Rebellion).
Other than that, what is to know? _________________ Don Diestler

That's because his was the Kaiburr Crystal. Unfortunately, this is a case like 'Delta Vega' from the 2009 Star Trek movie; someone making a name-dropping reference to something from the old stuff, heedless of the fact that sci-fi fans track all of this stuff and their cute name-drop will actually be confusing and create contradictory or bizarrely contradictory info. Sometimes the lack of nerd-trope knowledge in sci-fi creators is baffling. So, here is the page for the homophone crystal...
http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Kaiburr_crystal
EDIT: Meaning that there are a bunch of Kyber Crystals powering lightsabers and eventhe Death Star apparently (sigh...), and one big Kaiburr Crystal that enhances force powers.
It actually works for the most part, as in Legends lightsaber crystals were just Illuum (or other) crystals, and the Death Star didn't use magic crystals, but technology, for it's superlaser, while in the new canon, Kyber crystals power everything, but there's no SOMTE. The only awkward crossover are in the waning days of Legends, when people were trying to merge the two concepts and had 'Kaiburr crystals' powering lightsabers. That just doesn't make sense in EITHER continuity. _________________ Star Wars: Marvels, the audio drama: www.nolinecinemas.com
