The RAW allows unarmed characters to parry Melee Weapon attacks at a penalty. IMO, it is possible for a character to parry a ranged weapon (either unarmed or with a melee weapon) if they are close enough. By this, I mean that the character can, instead of using Dodge, can knock a blaster or firearm sufficiently off-angle that it misses the character. I think a rule for this should incorporate increasing difficulty based on the defending character's range to the attacker, factoring in the 21 Foot Rule, but I'd like some opinions on where the difficulty should start and how it should scale up. _________________ "No set of rules can cover every situation. Well, since SW uses meters and KM for ranges, that 21 meters (which realistically should be closer to 35 as evidenced by training sessions when i was doing security work), that would equate to 7 meters or less, where someone could so so. Which is going to be close to PB range for rifles and short for most pistols (some heavy that might be close to medium!)..
So i could see it as a +5 base at 3-4 meters, going up by +2 each additional meter out, and if you miss your parry, you make it EASIER to get shot! _________________ Confucious sayeth, don't wash cat while drunk! |

I give +15 modifier to parry against a ranged weapon if in melee range.
Ranged weapons should be used at range. If you don't believe me go get a water gun and you will quickly see how easy it is to parry a muzzle away in melee range.
Yes, a water gun. Do not use live weapons, or even paintball guns at close range. No one needs to be hurt. |

I would think parrying a ranged weapon would actually be easier than parrying a melee weapon at close range. After all, there are no sharp edges or pointy bits that you have to avoid, so all you would have to do is deflect it sufficiently to keep the blast from hitting you. If parrying a melee weapon barehanded is at +10 difficulty, I would say parrying (i.e. pushing it aside) would be +5 at best, with that difficulty increasing the further away you were when your character made your parry attempt.
I'll take your word for it that guns should not be used in close quarters, but this is sci-fi, and $h!t happens. Like this.

I think you're right.
EDIT: Although it is rather unintentionally funny. I think I'll leave it as is, and post the link I intended to post as an edit. _________________ "No set of rules can cover every situation. we made this rule a while back and did it as easily as easy is.
Difficulty to parry a ranged attack if the melee wielder is within range to strike/parry :
Difficulty of melee weapon + ranged weapons difficulty + ranged weapon wielders roll to hit.
Note that you can parry a shot designed to hit someone else if you are in combat with the person trying to hit that person, and due so far easier as they are not focused on you at the time.
we even have rules for disarm with throwing and disabling/destroying a ranged weapon by doing this.
Lightsabers are infamous for destroying blasters on up close parrys in my games. And throwing knifes are infamous for disarming or at least "parrying" shots aimed at others. |

That seems like it could scale up awfully fast... _________________ "No set of rules can cover every situation. It's expected that you will make up new rules to suit the needs of your game." - The Star Wars Roleplaying Game, 2R&E, pg. 69, WEG, 1996.
