Who here adheres to the 'time to use - one combat round' rule for First aid, meaning that even reactions can't be done, just 'free actions' like a half move or chatting..?

Honestly, it's never come up for me, but as short as rounds are in Star Wars, I'd be inclined to stick with the RAW on it (and not allow people to do anything other than free actions, in addition to it).

So in that case, can they still do reactive dodges/brawl or melee parries, as from reading the "Free actions" part on page 80 in the R&E book, those don't seem to class as being free actions? Ergo, anyone doing first aid is a sitting duck.

They aren't a sitting duck though - you can cancel prolonged actions at the expense of a die code drop in order to take other actions.

I just wish I knew where I saw that at... I'll keep looking.

Even back in 1e i never remembered seeing you being able to 'cancel' your action at a further die code..

I think he's just saying that - when doing a "Multiple-Roll Task" (p. 80) that takes numerous rounds - a character could choose to do a reaction:

A character can wait until he's attacked to use a reaction skill. The character can use up any remaining actions for a reaction or have the reaction be an extra action, accepting the higher multiple action penalty for the rest of the round.

That is true, but can they Do any reactions when doing a full round action such as first aid, when it states they can only do free actions during that time is what i am trying to find out.

I am almost certain I saw you can cancel any action deemed as being longer than an "action" - ie a full round action or longer, as you see fit.

But I can't find it........ and we use it to - so I kinda NEED to find it now.

Well not really because not being able to say something like "I drop the controls and my full round action, take a new dodge versus the lightsaber."

is kinda idiotic - until that point in the "initiative" if you wanna call it that, you were dodging - now yer gonna be penalized again for trying to do so again. it makes sense imo.

I just wish I knew where I saw it.

Even if it doesn't outright say it, by common sense if somebody is aware of the attack, and chooses to quit what they're doing (foregoing any possible success on that activity), they should then be allowed to take an action like dodging.

The only question would be: once they start back up on that long-term project (assuming they survive the skirmish), do they have to start over, or was their previous work useful in making some progress toward completing it.

I'd play it by ear and go with what makes logical sense, depending on the circumstances.

I'd say if they have to cancel it to make a parry/dodge, they need to start from scratch again.

Maybe change it to a House Rule whereby First Aid takes 2 Rounds minimum (which would be increased in proportion to the Damage level)?

1 Round does seem pretty quick. Most of the time you'd hope that someone would want to inspect the wound before treating it (hence my suggestion of 2 Rounds minimum).

While I agree that time taken should be at least two round, that shouldn't mean wasting in with inspecting the wound during combat or any situation that is chaotic. Marine Corp first aid rule #1 stop the bleeding, rule #2 start the breathing. Everything else is for the Navy Corpsman.
