Does the grapple from the core book allow others to take actions other than break free?
what about the martial arts version from rebel handbook?
why oh WHY is encryption a skill and yet ALL tools to add in doing so are specific to the target to be encrypted/decrypted. IE Droid Prog/Repair, Comp Prog/Repair, or just Plain old Security???
what on earth am I to tell my poor slicer? I had forgotten about this MESS until I started a new campaign two days ago. |

Grappling:
Fully mental actions are allowed, as well as actions requiring minimum physical movement. Examples might be: A grappled stormtrooper depressing the tongue toggle inside the helmet, Lobot triggering something with his implant, and so on.
I don't have the Rebel handbook in front of me, so I don't have any useful input about that.
Slicing:
There's a couple of routes you could go here. Personally, I'd likely chuck the entire mess of skills, and just streamline the thing. (I tend to do the same with Melee Parry.)
I'm not familiar with Encryption. Shouldn't that be an (A) under a KNO: Scholar: Math or something? Encryption in and of itself is an implementation of a mathematics-specific principle, for instance "Factorization is hard" (RSA). |

Could you give me some additional reference by listing where Encryption is listed as a skill. I don't remember it as being one of the R&E base skills. Or is it a specialization of a skill? _________________ __________________________________
Before we take any of this too seriously, just remember that in the middle episode a little rubber puppet moves a spaceship with his mind. |

I'd see encryption being a specialty of Comms not security, since that deals with physical locks, whether mechanical or electronic. _________________ Confucious sayeth, don't wash cat while drunk! |

Other than for password breaking, i don't see much encrypt/decrypt for computers. _________________ Confucious sayeth, don't wash cat while drunk! |

Encryption is definitely related to communications (a TEC skill). Security is specifically about breaking into physically locked things (As in the Aliens movie: "Hudson! Run a bypass!"). |

Yup. Comms is short hand for communications. Computer short hand is comp. _________________ Confucious sayeth, don't wash cat while drunk! |

If you don't have the m.art maneuver, it would default to a brawl form of grapple, which may not be as good. _________________ Confucious sayeth, don't wash cat while drunk! |

But can you use it at a penalty or a higher difficulty? I've wondered that myself. Why can't a character try a jumping kick, after all? _________________ Blasted rules. Why can't they just be perfect? |

We are running into this problem with the 3rd ed rules.
I would keep it simple, make any brawling "maneuvers" 2 Difficulties Higher than it would be with trained (A) Martial Arts. For instance Grapple would then require a Very Difficult brawling skill roll, opposed by brawling parry. If successful, the target must beat the holder in an opposed Strength check to break free.
The 2 Difficulty Levels higher is derived from how the RAW defines using computer programming/repair in lieu of (A) droid engineering, in the droid modification and creation rules. It seems to be an approximate benchmark for using a non-advanced skill in lieu of an advanced skill. Of, course this is based on a case-by-case basis, and at the GM discretion.
This could be used for a few other maneuvers like Foot Sweep, Head-Butt, and Disarm. Others would be inappropriate like Flying Kick.
Note too that one should be cautious about allowing too many tricks using brawling, let your players know that a complication may result in a broken hand or worse. A failed opposed Strength roll during a grapple could quickly turn into a vibrodagger in the gut at close quarters. |

They can, it just won't get the bonuses the flying kick maneuver gives, such as the extra damage, or the 'intergrated free move'. Same with spinning kick, they won't gain the bonus to hit / penalty to defend against it. _________________ Confucious sayeth, don't wash cat while drunk! |
