|

I'm reading up on TOR-era arms and equipment, and it appears there's a prevalence of sonic and disruptor weapons for that era. Couple of questions.
Have there ever been official or unofficial D6 stats for disruptors? I know I've seen sonic weapons in places like the AOTC sourcebook, but I don't recall disruptors.
I also see that the sonic weapons listed in AOTC and the KOTOR conversion have sonic weapons fired with Energy Weapons > Sonic Weapons. Is this fan determined, or are there RAW roots for this? I suppose I would assume some sort of crossover between the sonic weapons and the Blasters skill - after all, it's point and shoot, right? |

Yes actually. Gundarks Fantastic Personal Gear contained an entry for a Disruptor Pistol
It did 6D+2 damage, with extremely short range (0-3/5/7) and 5 shot capacity and max fire rate of 1 shot/round. (and 4,X availability)
There was also the MSD-36 Heavy Disruptor Pistol, with 10 shots, 1 shot/round fire limit, same range and 6D damage. _________________ http://swfallingstar.podbean.com

Shouldn't sonic weapons be resisted more with Perception than straight strength though? _________________ Confucious sayeth, don't wash cat while drunk! |

I wouldn't think so. Its still a physical attack on your body. Your ability to notice something really doesn't come into play.
Just because your ears can hear (some) things that are sonic, doesn't make the attack any less physical. If you used that same logic, your Perception could be used to resist lasers too. since your eyes see light and Seeing is also governed by perception _________________ http://swfallingstar.podbean.com

Yeah, I've wanted to move away from Blaster as a skill and move it to be more like Pistols/ Rifles /Heavy (Pistols including holdouts/sporting/heavy blaster pistols, the Rifles including rifles & Carbines and Heavy including repeating blasters, autocannons as seen in clone wars) _________________ http://swfallingstar.podbean.com

Obviously this interests me because I have a bointy hunter PC and also the use of sonic technology for non offensive use might be an interesting subtopic. Could be useful tool. |

I'm interested as well.
What about a special rule for the skills? If at any time you want to go from Blaster to Energy Weapons (or the reverse), you can buy the other skill cheaply? Would that work? |

Maybe we see sonic weapons differently. I see them as assaulting your ears, not your body. _________________ Confucious sayeth, don't wash cat while drunk! |

Sonic weaponry to disorient and stun, targets your sense of balance (partially through your ears), and can physically disrupt vision (eyeballs vibrating means your vision isn't clear). A completely enclosed helmet is a good defense against that kind of sonics. Giving penalties to PER against this kind of 'nuisance' sonics makes some sense.
Pushing this up in energy (most weapons that kill is just a matter of energy transference to the target), you get sonic weaponry that can kill. Sound is a pressure wave, to injure or kill you need extreme (sci fi) pressures. Ever stood in front of a subwoofer? Felt the thrumming in your chest? That's your lungs, getting slapped by sonic waves.
Ultrasound can cause damage in lungs and the intestines, at least in mice. It can induce bradycardia and atrial flutter (heart problems). Long-term exposure to even low levels of sound, can cause sinus problems, lung problems, and encephalopathy (brain dysfunction) similar to that caused by minor head trauma.
So. Sonic weaponry in my mind would tend to be an area weapon (or at least wide-beam weapon), and depending on the energy involved, would either be an active area denial system (causing nausea, dizziness and vertigo) or an indiscriminate kill or injury system (causing internal bruising, with all sorts of side effects). It's not a 'blaster by any other name'. And, obviously, it needs an atmosphere.
In a vacuum, not much would happen if someone directed a sonic weapon against anyone else, unless it could travel through something. (Putting the muzzle of a sonic weapon so that it is physically touching the helmet of another, and then pulling the trigger, would have the usual effect.) |

Sure, in real life (due to the laws of physics) "no one can hear you scream".
But in Star Wars, when something like the Death Star goes kablooey, we all hear a massive explosion! _________________ Currently Running: Villains & Vigilantes (a 32-year-old campaign with multiple groups) and D6 Star Wars; mostly on hiatus are Adventures in Middle-earth and Delta Green |

EVEN IF a sonic weapon only attacks the ears, why would having more sensitive ears make you less vulnerable to that sort of attack?
Quite the reverse, the better your hearing the worse it would feel to hear a painful noise.
Does anyone in Epi II actually get hit with those guns? _________________ http://swfallingstar.podbean.com

Take the Tales of the Jedi period, or even the KOTOR period (via the conversions).
We have Blasters skill, Energy Weapons skill, and Sonic Weapons skill... Are these really necessary? Do we really need 3-4 skills to fire a point-at-and-destroy gun? I'll give you Firearms, since archaic slug throwers have kickback. But in a period like KOTOR where you have all the weapon types present, having separate skills without crossover seems odd.
Specifically, it feels like a convergence of edge cases. The different skills were meant to represent eras of different weaponry. Sure, there are no Blasters at this time, so we'll make up a new skill for this era. Then, in the KOTOR era, you unfortunately have all the weapons represented at once, and I don't think the creators of the different skills intended that.
Can we brainstorm a way for the skills to overlap some? Or to provide a bonus to another skill? They very much do feel like overlap skills.
For example. I have 9D+1 in Blasters, with a 3D DEX. I pick up a pulse-weave energy weapon. "Lol wut, I don't know how this works." |

Apart from the Rule of Cool, there might be a different reason why there's all sorts of auditory clues in the Star Wars universe - an enhanced audioscape as part of an augmented reality interface. It's a neat idea, and possibly a neat piece of tech. |
