Is thete any instances of a ship being run by an AI you could talk to?
Any idea what Stats something like that would have?
I think somone had one in Galaxy Guide 6, but wether the AI could talk, Im unsure.
In theory a cheap mod would be wiring a droid brain into the computer, and wiring up a voicebox or comm system or droid translator.
Just one of those ideas I want to sound out for the 3-Z.[/u] |

It could be a fun and unique concept to work with for a while. Certainly people have droids that work on board ships. Some have even made slave-circuit modifications using droid brains.
However, people in the SW universe aren't 100% trusting of the droids. They have their memories wiped to make sure they don't get quirky, and make sure they can put restraining bolts on them to keep them in line. If someone did give an AI their entire trust it could either be as awesome as a Kit/Michael relationship or as horrifying as a HAL/Dave relationship.
I think it's a fantastic idea to integrate, particularly if you can make the trust relationship part of the adventure. Say that bad things start happening on board the long-term voyage. Are they just accidents? Are they sabbotage? Is it a member of the crew, or is it the droid AI going rogue?
It sounds like a natural environment to play on suspicions, and see how they play out their ideas. _________________ __________________________________

Its an intriguing storyline, but how would you stat such a thing. I mean if it was a custom AI or a modified stock Droid brain? |

None of the ships in GG6 had AI's, but there was a ship in the Adventure Journals (the Kiera) that had a fully sentient AI concealed somewhere in the ship's computer core... _________________ "No set of rules can cover every situation. That depends. How much control over ship functions would you be willing to give Kit/HAL?
I'll see if I can look up Kiera in my journals. _________________ __________________________________

I found it in Adventure Journal 4, Page 80-81, The Kierra:
The Kierra
Craft: Modified Corellian Engineering YT-1300 Transport
Type: Modified light freighter
Scale: Starfighter
Length: 26.7 meters
Skill: Space transports: YT-1300 transport
Crew: 1 or 2
Passengers: 10
Cargo Capacity: 135 metric tons
Consumables: 3 months
Hyperdrive Multiplier: x1
Hyperdrive Backup: x10
Nav Computer: Yes
Maneuverability: 2D
Space: 4
Atmosphere: 260; 750kmh
Hull: 3D+2
Shields: 2D+1
Sensors:
Passive: 15/0D
Scan: 30/1D
Search: 50/3D
Focus: 2/4D
Weapons:
One Double Laser Cannon
Fire Arc: Front
Scale: Starfighter
Crew: Pilot
Skill: Starhip Gunnery
Fire Control: 1D+2
Space Range: 1-3/12/25
Atmosphere Range: 100-300m/1.2km/2.5km

One Laser Cannon
Fire Arc: Turret
Scale: Starfighter

Skill: Starhip Gunnery
Fire Control: 2D
Space Range: 1-3/12/25
Atmosphere Range: 100-300m/1.2km/2.5km
Damage: 4D+2
Capsule: The Kierra is Thaddeus Ross' modified YT-1300 freighter. As one of the previous modifications it was given a droid intelligence to monitor ship's systems. The intelligence, also named Kierra, has developed its own personality.
And the artificial intelligence, Kierra, statted as a Droid:
Kierra
Type: Droid intelligence
DEXTERITY 0D

alien species 6D, cultures 6D+1, languages 7D, law enforcement 7D+1, planetary systems 6D+2, value 6D

Character Points: 7
Capsule: How and why Kierra got into the onboard systems of the light freighter are not known. however, it is certain that she either was trapped inside the ship or hidden there sometime after the construction of the freighter. While inspecting the ship, Ross accidentally awakened her and thus began a long partnership with the eccentric droid. While Kierra can manipulate certain ship functions like sensors and communications, she had to learn astrogation and shields from her Human mentor. She is continually learning new functions by way of self-programming and additional input from Ross.
Her uncanny ability to imitate Human behavior is disarming to strangers and has been heavily influenced by Ross and prolonged contact with other intelligent (often eccentric) species.
Interesting concept to say the least...

I designed a compleatly autonomus AI controled starship from the time of Xim the despot, called Xim's Revenge.
The players loved him and he became a great member of the team. |

You'd also get the issue with the whole preservation of life issue with AI/droids. Does the party try to get into combat? Would the droid brain/AI take over controls to fly them out? Shunt power from weapons (so the pc's cant kill others) to boost shields.. _________________ Confucious sayeth, don't wash cat while drunk! |

That would be an interesting twist, having a droid that not only cannot take sentient life, but takes its mandate far enough to prevent others from taking sentient life. This could be very interesting indeed. _________________ __________________________________

You need look no further than the Millennium Falcon for your answer. That ship had several droid brains wired together to run systems on the ship. Sometimes they cooperated, sometimes they actually fought each other.
It's never explicitly stated in the movies, that I can remember, but it is at least implied in Ep. V. You remember the part where Han tells 3PO he needs him to "talk" to the Falcon and figure out what was wrong with the hyperdrive? 3PO had no mechanical skills, he couldn't actually do a diagnostic like R2 could. He literally just asked the droid brains what was wrong.

Unless you're actually manufacturing a custom droid brain, just use the stats of whatever droid you pulled the brain out of. An obvious choice would be an astromech. Just remove any Dex or Str skills and keep the rest. Tweak as needed.

I did something similar. It wasn't so much a ship with a droid brain as it was a starfighter scale droid that was designed to carry passengers. It also had a character scale droid chassis that could either operate independently or as a remote. Looking back, it was kind of like what became of EDI in the Mass Effect series, except the main AI stayed with the droidship. |

In those cases, would brain damage not set in from getting ionized? _________________ Confucious sayeth, don't wash cat while drunk! |

Perhaps to the same extent that brain damage sets in for organics as a result of stun damage. |

Theres also a short story in Tales of the Empire that has a Smuggler with a YT that has a Droid brain that actually acts as copilot and support for him. She's able to run warmup and preflight, and shunt energy to shields, also provide active tracking of hostiles. She has full access to the ship's systems, using them to 'explore' things and snoop for the pilot.
As to the logic issues for attacking sentients...there are droids that have surpassed or had their software altered for such. I don't see why a AI built in to a ship couldn't be set up the same way. |

Well, by the 2nd novel of the Thrawn trilogy (Dark force rising), we know getting hit by an ion cannon can seriously jack your nervous system up. And i could have sworn some other novels mentioned repeated stunning after already going down can do the same. _________________ Confucious sayeth, don't wash cat while drunk! |
