|
|
I'm looking for a template to match the heavy gunner commando.
A repeater cannon, td wielding heavily armored solder.
I could have sworn I had found one before.
It came with heavy armor, a light repeater cannon, and 6 td's.
I cannot found it now. It may have been an adaptation from the d20 stuff.
Any suggestions or help appreciated. |

I've never seen something like that in any of the WEG books (6 thermal detonators is a bit much), so you may be right that it is from a D20 conversion. _________________ "No set of rules can cover every situation. well has anyone seen a template that had a light repeater cannon either?
far as I have seen none of the d6 books even have the weapon listed let alone a template that used em.
But does anyone know of this character type from d20 or another star wars system?
I don't think it was a template to match the commando class from the video game SW:TOR but it is a match.
My problem is I KNOW I've seen the template as d6 but don't know where the conversion would be from.
So without even that go by...yeah.
And yeah I can agree that 6 TD's may be a bit much but thats just what I remember from the template. And I know over numerous classes with up to 4, including a few that had no real reason to have a TD in the first place |

Closest concept I can think of is the SpecForce Heavy Weapons Specialist template. DEX 3D+2. KNO 2D+2. MEC 3D. PER 2D+2. STR 3D. TEC 3D. Move 10. FS: No. FP 1. DSP 0. CP 10. Gear: Blaster pistol 4D, comlink, vibroknife STR+1D, heavy weapon (varies by mission), from Rules of Engagement.
You could conceivably outfit the character with a light repeater, or even a Z-6 rotating blaster as the Rancor Pit d20 conversion stats. _________________ The Enteague Sector | Cracken's Collection of Crackpots

I was thinking that - what book was the z-6 taken from or do you have a link? |

The Z6 would be in the Forum's weapons compilation book if it is anywhere. _________________ "No set of rules can cover every situation. It's expected that you will make up new rules to suit the needs of your game." - The Star Wars Roleplaying Game, 2R&E, pg. 69, WEG, 1996.

Are you sure it was even a 'base template' and not someone's conversion of an established character?
Even the spec force demo tech only gets 1 TD (same with the bounty hunter). So starting with 6 is massive. add to that armor and a repeating cannon (no d6 starting book has them but the d20 conversion for the Z6 repeater exists in one of the weapons books).. i doubt its something from any D6 site unless as said it was a conversion of an existing character... _________________ Confucious sayeth, don't wash cat while drunk! |

Still trying to find the Z-6.
It's not in gry's book if that's what you meant by the weapons compilation book Neill
I did grab some other D20 conversion books to look through so maybe I'll find something.
I understand the comment on the whole 6td's a cannon and heavy armor being a bit much. But that is what the character is, and there are FAR better geared templates through the official books.
And I gotta say - the Heavy Weapons Specialist NOT having armor - is ludicrous.
A Special Forces Soldier not being given armor but being given a big gun = DEATH, pure and simple.
You are supposed to be the front line gun as a heavy gunner - sweep and clear or sweep to hold - you are NOT gonna get that done without even a blast vest to your name.
I'm not meaning to be so defensive or aggressive but this is starting to annoy me. The books can throw NPC fodder guys at you that are equipped like this and yet no one can be allowed to play as one.
And then I got people saying 6 td's are too much.
DMG or Cost? Cuss you gotta know is that I can guarantee you that I can do more damage with a stock ship - and it sure as hell is worth more. The equipment listings have never been balanced. But I don't even really care about that even.
Just a class that had the big gun and armor would make me happy at this point and I'm not even able to find that. *rubs temples*
For a setting that is generally during wartime there are some big holes in template choices is all I'm saying. |

Like who? Very few templates start with armor, let alone a heavy gun and explosives.. The closest to it is the bounty hunter (1d armor, 1td, and a light repeater).

While i agree, they SHOULD have armor. So too should almost all the spec force templates. The ONLY spec force template that does get armor starting out is the space ops trooper.

And most of those NPCs have what, 12d attributes and 5-8d skills? Their gear is what makes up the difference.

True there are a few stock templates with a ship.. Most of which have but one gun, and that gun is LEGAL. A pc starting with 6 thermals would definitely be pushing the legal boundaries.

Again. Look at the bounty hunter. Light repeater, heavy pistol, regular pistol, hold out pistol, and armor. _________________ Confucious sayeth, don't wash cat while drunk! |

From what I've ascertained in Real Life "Heavy Weapons Guys" fire their machine guns on a tripod from the prone position. They also fire them from the prone position, and from the prone position and sometimes from the prone position. When they're not firing their heavy weapons from the prone position they fire from the prone position and occasionally they also utilize the prone position.
You see, you need to get the tripod set up, and link the ammo together. It takes time to set up properly to lay down a continuous stream of high caliber weapons fire. From the prone position.
This is, however, a game and you will probably want to play like you're in Team Fortress Classic. Understandable. I do hope your GM is understanding.
Personally I would play a barabel if I were you. 4D+2 Per, 4D dex, 5D str, serious natural armor and night vision. Resisting blaster fire at 6D without armor is very nice.
Hopefully your GM will let you get some armor. Or do what I do and give you cash and Gry's equipment book. Coynite armor is 2D against everything, -1D to all dex skills and costs 150 credits. You'll also want to start with the Blastech T-21. 6D damage & only costs 2,000 credits. For a side arm take the Merr-Sonn 434.
Remember, part of the game is getting a chance to upgrade your gear. It's important for the GM to have carrots to offer you, and gear upgrades are part of that.
Good luck. And remember to use the prone position, preferably from behind cover. |

6 Thermal Detonators are too much. Thermal Detonators do 10D character scale damage. Let me scale that out for you: 8D speeder scale, 6D walker scale and 4D Starfighter scale.
To give you a reference point, a TIE fighter only has a 2D Starfighter hull code. An AT-AT has a 6D walker scale hull. An AT-ST has a 3D walker scale hull code. Thermal detonators are too powerful.
A half dozen 5-6D grenades would not be too much. Now you're doing extreme character scale damage and decent speeder scale damage.
Yes, some characters start with a ship, but they usually start with debt as well. Additionally, those ships tend to suck in comparison to other vehicles of their scale. I wouldn't want to fly a stock YT-1300 against a half squadron of TIE fighters.
Thermal detonators and Repeater weapons tend to be the best of their scale. 6 Thermal detonators would throw off the balance of most games. |

Maybe their group plays an OP campaign. He may be making this new char to hop in with 60 to 80 cp chars. However, if everyone were making starting chars and one of my players tried this...I'd let him have all the whiz-bang and then *seriously* drop the hammer on him and his squad. The fights would require gear like that, the customs agents would all be contraband sniffing machines, and I'd employ a house rule on how unstable a TD is. After all, they are a little bit of a star wrapped in tinfoil. Hard jarring or say blaster damage and they have a chance to detonate on the carrier. We usually went with 1 in 6, and ramped it up on how stupid the offending party was being. |

Slight correction. Most machine gunners of heavy weapons use either a kneeling position, or sitting position. Prone is for using medium machine guns or rifles with a bipod.

That's assuming the DM allows you to set up a customized template. Also that set up has used 13d+2 of the pc's starting dice allocation, so his mech, tech and know will be something like 1d+1, 1d and 2d.

Again that is assuming the DM allows you just to purchase things from the books with out thought to what they are. Anyone imo wanting to get coyonite armor has to
A) locate a coyonite,
B) Challenge him to hand to hand combat
C) WIN. _________________ Confucious sayeth, don't wash cat while drunk! |
