If somebody comes up with good personal shields, then practically everybody who is prone to get into a fight or three will want them. So the GM should probably come up with one (or several) reasons why that hasn't happened, and why we don't see everybody using personal shields in the films. Cost, special materials, legal restrictions, limited functionality, or something.
THat said, once you make sure you can keep things in check, you can have a lot of fun running wild. |

That's not too bad. I was scared it was going to be something hereditary! |

It is hereditary! If you don't have children, your children won't either! _________________ __________________________________

This made me literally LOL. Good call.
I figure that it's a sour source of technology. It can be made unreliable (roll XD and if the result is less than Y it fails to activate) or something like that. Keeping it out of their hands, or making it less desirable isn't tough. Jacking up the cost isn't difficult, either. For my PC's, they ended up nuking the Espo camps with frag grenades... So the shields were destroyed. It was successful for them, so it's likely that they will use it again. Of course, YRMV. Also, the droideka shield is powered by that big-ol' battery on it's under carriage so the PC's taking and using that would be too cumbersome for it's worth.
For my alternate setting I plan to make it unreliable tech. There are some races that will use it more than others; the more reliable versions just cost so much more, though, that only a few will bother using them.
Edit: Here's what I've got working for my shield system in my alternate campaign...
It negates 5D damage from energy weapons. This means that all but the highest powered weaponry, or larger scaled weapons, aren’t going to do much. It requires a medium difficulty activation roll to get it running (that’s a 13). Each round it’s active the character using the shield rolls a D6. If the result is a 1, the shield craps out. It can remain active as long as the character wants, assuming they don’t fail the roll – it’s a 17% failure chance. It can only be activated 7 times per day. |

In our sparks group, we have a small backpack shield generator (full body), that just gives +1d to your soak rolls.. The pack lasts for 2 minutes of combat, and takes a full day to recharge.. _________________ Confucious sayeth, don't wash cat while drunk! |

I am loving all of these ideas about energy shields.
I think that if I were to include them in my campaign, I would allow all of the ideas that people have offered, so that there is a variety of options.
I like cheshire's converted shields (especially the fact that they cause sterility.) I also like Hyfigh's idea, and would include a shield like that.
The shield reduction rules look great, and I would make some models that work like that.
It's a big galaxy with competing industries. I don't see why all reasonable options can't exist. They just cannot be overpowered or cheap! _________________ "I still wouldn't have a roll for it - but that's just how I roll." |

In my last campaign, the Pcs kinda went overboard on energy weapons. Everybody had a big blaster or three, and no one knew how to use anything else.
So after awhile, they rand into a bounty hunter, the Gand With No Name, who walked out with his shield generating droid, power droid, interpreter droid, and a grenade launcher.

In one of our spark's modules there is a dog like creature that actually 'feeds' on energy, so shooting them with a blaster (no matter how potent) does nothing to them. One group i ran through that module, was "NO fair" when their shots did nothing.
Its not imo surprising that with all the life forms out there that some have gotten to like eating energy (mynocks) _________________ Confucious sayeth, don't wash cat while drunk! |

Meh... it's no different than having a bullet-proof hide/chitin/shell. Some forms of attack are just not effective. End of story.
... Might as well try to drown a fish. |

And imagine what that creature would do if it could suck on someone's energy shield. _________________ __________________________________

IIRC of the animal, it was specific to blasers (something to do with the gas).. not all energy like mynocks.
Now how ever i have made a Playable race that due to their anatomy take NO damage from stun blaster shots/grenades, but take more damage from fire based weapons (flamers) _________________ Confucious sayeth, don't wash cat while drunk! |
