What "no pdf's" policy?

I would wonder what this means for Star Wars the Old Republic.

One of the conditions of a license agreement with LFL to produce an RPG is that the RPG company cannot produce any PDF copies of their books, nor can they produce or allow the fan-distribution of programs such as character generators. This is because the production of electronic Star Wars products is the privilege of Lucas Arts.

Now, given that the condition was already a part of the license agreement that FFG has with LFLI don't think it means anything for the immediate future, but when/if the license agreement is renewed, I would be interested in seeing what happens.

WoTC out out pdf's on their website for Star Wars d20 not any of the main books but adventures and supplemets. Not sure they were pdf's but they were free downloadable files with Text and Pictures. This pdf band was new to me. Where could I read more on the agreement between Lucas Arts and Fantasy Flight or any other rpg designer.

From what I read there is hope they are not going to having video games. They will just source that out to other companies now. That is at least what I understood from the article.

I think that other companies will produce the games, perhaps Bioware dares to risa that torch. I hope so, but find it hardly possible looking at the problems they are having mantaining SWOR up and running.

Anyway is a sad thing. As KeldorKatarn said I always had the hope that a new Xwing vs TieFighter game will see the light again. And I was hoping to play 1313 too... I hope that another company will take it where they left it but seeing the present situation is unlikely too.

But above all this gamer complaints I hope that the talented people at LucasArts that suddenly found themselves without job find another one soon.

I agree Frandal I certainly hope they find other jobs very soon. I am more worried about a great many people losing there job than I am some game that might or might not have gotten made either way. On yahoo news http://games.yahoo.com/blogs/plugged-in/disney-shuts-down-lucasarts-194516133.html
at the bottom of the article they ask about 1313 and it seems Disney kind of dodges the question.

I would love to see a new x-wing vs tie fighter game as well as a new Jedi Starfighter game.

I should clarify, they were unable to produce any standalone PDF products, i.e., a Knights of the Old Republic Campaign Guide ebook download. They could produce supplements and publish them online. Thus, if they had 3-5 pages that they wanted to stick in the core content by they couldn't find the page space to do so, they could publish them online in PDF format. Thus they not uncommonly did. Much the same is true with their minis line.

Also FFG has a downloadable adventure and a couple of extra characters sheets that supplement their beginner game box.

Citation is difficult, but maybe I'll give it another try later. The problem is that the discussions on the WOTC forums where game developers like Rod Thompson came right out and said so are long buried, and I'm afraid that most of the references to the condition of the license are only repeats by other users with no more status or credentials than I have. For example, you can see some vague reference to the notion here in the ffg forums, but it falls well short of what I would consider good evidence of the my claim.

There are some other vague references that treat the notion as common knowledge, but that doesn't get very specific. For example in Episode 05 of the "new" Order 66 Podcast you can hear GM Chris and GM Dave harassing Sam Stewart about him e-mailing them a copy of the pdf version of the beta book that Stewart had on his computer, and Stewart replies with something to the effect of "I would like to keep my job."

In contrast there are e-book versions of some of the novels produced by LucasBooks, but I'm not even going to pretend that I understand how such things interplay across the various companies. Probably the fact that the few PDFs from LucasBooks are not games probably makes a difference, but this is only a guess.

From what I can tell it seems that Lucas Arts will exist as a licensing entity and not much more. So, it may be that the company will consist of a few jobs that contract out the ability to make Star Wars and Indiana Jones games. I just wouldn't count on any more X-Wing games. Not that this was much of a reality after the lag we've had after Jedi Starfighter. Personally, I wouldn't mind another Jedi Knight game, but I don't think I've had a prayer of that in a LONG time.

Interesting taking what you say of the no PDF policy as fact would make me raise a few possibilities. The no stand alone ones make sense as everyone I got from the WoTC site was very short just a few pages or a correction to a book. As for the novels in PDF are they official releases. If they there the push buy books stores for e readers might have cause that change. Or maybe it was just part of Lucas Arts contracts not a LFltd policy. Though there can be a great many star wars products found in PDF format. I stay clear of them myself as largely I prefer a book in my hand.

As far a the novels gone there were some on first release as e-books only. Not sure the format but they were official licensed novels. I would hope though closing Lucas Arts would not cancel any existing contracts and if that is the case then I a sure the no PDF clause would remain at least for the length of the current contract.

More on topic I do not expect to see a new star fighter game as it has been so long since one came out but it would still be nice. Same thing with another Jedi Knight games. Great games that we are not likely to see more of but it would be nice. But it seems at least there is still hope we might one day see good Star Wars games again still.

Dude, you and I are on the exact same page. A reboot of the X-Wing series Starfighter sims is the thing I want most from Star Wars electronic gaming.
