Yep, and I'm pretty psyched about it. Abrams has done a great job with stuff before, and he's a big fan of Star Wars and a talented director. Should be awesome! Very Happy

Though i DID notice on the press release (which only seemed to get mentioned on the news 'Ticker), that it was A new star wars film. Not films, not trilogy..

All I have to say is; I reserve the right to pass judgement until after the first new movie is released! I just hope that they dont mess with the existing materials (Movies, books, comics, . . . )

So the story about Abrams declining Star Wars early on going public must have been a ploy to get more money... that worked.

Star Wars Is Being Kick-Started with Dynamite J.J. Abrams to Direct Star Wars: Episode VII

A big fan of the classic trilogy. They could do so much worse. I'm choosing to look at this as a good sign, and I remain cautously optimistic about the next film trilogy.

It might not have had anything to do with money, Whill. Reports suggest that J.J. turned the job down at first (despite being a huge Star Wars fan), but was then persuaded by Kathleen Kennedy to do it.

I realize it wasn't carefully worded, but I was specifically referring to the fact that Abrams only recently went public with the revelation that he had turned Star Wars down months ago. Early on he said he wouldn't do it, but he never said that he turned it down until months later. He reveals that in early January, and a few weeks later he is announced as the director.

Why didn't he say he turned it down when he turned it down? If his initial declination had to be secret, why reveal it at all? And why early January?

Could it be a complete coincidence that he revealed that he had he declined it months ago, and then a few weeks after he makes that public, he accepts an offer? I guess. But if you relauched the Star Trek franchise with much success and they asked you to relaunch Star Wars, don't you think you'd realize that you're so high in demand and you don't have to accept the first offer? Abrams was offered a chance to become king of the nerds!

But sure, maybe Kennedy just talked Abrams into accepting it with no more money than he was originally offered. Like Lucas declined Harrison Ford's counter-offer to star in Return of the Jedi for an exorbitant fee many times that of his co-stars and with the condition Han dies. Lucas somehow talked Ford into accepting the original monetary offer (and Han not dying), which was not a penny more than Hamil and Fisher (all three actors made an identical amount of money in cash and profit points for all three Star Wars fillms). Maybe Kennedy did just talk Abrams into it.

But the fact that he revealed his intitial declination months later and only a few weeks before accepting an offer is suspect. I hope he did get more money for it and it is more motivation for him to live up to high expectations. But most importantly, I'm glad they have a director so they can get the ball rolling on this thing!

Okay, chime in on this one people, would you like to see E VII made in 3D or the traditional 2D?

While I'm not a hater of 3D, and there's even times it can really add to a movie (Avatar, Beowolf), all I'm looking for it 2D. I'll likely see it in 3D if it comes out that way, but only if it's filmed in 3D (it's a complete waste of $ if they film in 2D and tack on the 3D later, IMHO).

TF3? What's that an initialism for? Am I that behind on movies that I missed something particularly popular?

Transformers 3, Ches.

I like 3d, if done well, but we don't go to the movies all that much. The Hobbit, the last movie we saw, was in 3d and was awesome.
