|
|
Hey guys
We are running a Pirating campaign and I am having some trouble (don't know why) figuring out what a share out is and how it works. For example, in Pirates and Privateers, it suggests the following shareout:
Regular hands receive a single share
Borders take an extra half to full share
Officers take 2 and a half to 3 shares
and the captian takes 3-5 shares
Again, i keep thinking of percentages when dividing loot among a pirates crew. Can anyone give me some clarification on this? OR if anyone has any other suggestions on how to divide loot, that would help too! Thanks! |

Looks fair to me. _________________ "No set of rules can cover every situation. It's expected that you will make up new rules to suit the needs of your game." - The Star Wars Roleplaying Game, 2R&E, pg. 69, WEG, 1996.

Maybe I am not explaining myself well enough. I dont understand whats its telling me. What's a share? How would you divide a cash profit in this way? |

Ok, total up the total number of shares, so lets say on a small pirate ship, you have a captain, three officers, eight boarders and six deckhands, for a total of 18 souls on board. However, each gets a different "share out" based on their rank and duties.
Captain = 4 shares
Officers (3) = 3 shares each (12 total)
Boarders (8) = 2 shares each (16 total)
Deckhands (6) = 1 share each (6 total)
Total = 38 shares, split between 18 crew.
Now, say this small ship captures a prize with a combined value of 380,000 credits net (i.e. the total, gross, value of the prize after paying out for operating expenses and any ship's fund). Divide that by 38, and you get a share value of 10,000 credits per share. You then apply that value as the base to the number of shares each crewmember gets, so:
Captain = 4 shares x 10,000 = 40,000 credits
Officers = 3 shares each x 10,000 = 30,000 credits each
Boarders = 2 shares each x 10,000 = 20,000 credits each
Deckhands = 1 share each x 10,000 = 10,000 credits each
Does that clear it up? _________________ "No set of rules can cover every situation. It's expected that you will make up new rules to suit the needs of your game." - The Star Wars Roleplaying Game, 2R&E, pg. 69, WEG, 1996.

Basically, you just add up how many shares the crew gets overall, then divide the loot into that many parts, and give it out.
For example, lets say you have a crew with a captain, three officers and ten crew members, five of which act as boarders.
The captain gets five shares.
The officers get three shares each, for a total of nine shares.
The boarders get two shares, for ten more.
The remainder of the crew gets one each, or five total.
So all together it comes to twenty-nine shares. You divide the loot by twenty nine, and each person gets the appropriate amount. |

A friend of mind did a good post on this on the C&C board a while back (about pirates & traders in the Traveller game) and he had a GREAT break down on it. I'll see if I can find it later and cross post it here.
One think he included was either the ship owner (or the captain if he is the owner) gets the lion's share of the loot/pay even before it is divided out. This is the cost of running/owning the ship, buying the fuel food etc and fixing the damage from the action.
At first I wasn't sure about it, but then I relooked and it made sense. (like I said, it was a good post)
With that, I'd add all damage to the ship and food/consumables are paid for and any money owed taken out of the total before the share is divided out ... At least to a point. This could also come into being part of the role playing and how much trust do you have in your captain & he has in you. Is he honest and taking out a fare amount for the ship's upkeep before he splits the share, or is he a cheat even you his crew ??? Is he paying off his gambling debts off the back of your hard work and short sharing you, or is he only paying off 10% of the debt for his ship and giving you a fare share ???
Oh yeah, he also included the crew reinvesting their share (or part of it) back into the ship and becoming 'part owners' in the enterprise instead of just being nugs for pay. Again, I doubted this would be the case too often, but then in his game we all tended to do that, and it paid off in the long run. _________________ "And so I am become a knight of the Kingdom of Dreams and Shadows!" - Mark Twain

I mentioned that, I think, with the shares being calculated from the net prize value instead of the gross. It probably makes it easier on ship's morale if you say that the money is for the ship's repair fund than if you say it all goes to the captain / owner. That's a quick recipe for mutiny if the profit share percentage is too far out of whack. _________________ "No set of rules can cover every situation. Ignore my above post, ... I guess it helps if I read all the post before I reply and cover something already covered ... _________________ "And so I am become a knight of the Kingdom of Dreams and Shadows!" - Mark Twain

What they all said.. though a slight correction. it would be NET profit not gross.
