Nope, a PC chooses to pick a species with a racial "language barrier" i wont eliminate that with a translator droid.

Funny that just as the group becomes fluent - more PCs join that have to learn the language.

Yeah, I figure that at KNO 3D, Anala probably catches some of it, but she struggles to understand more than the basic idea of what is being said. That said, she will probaby want to work on her languages just so she can communicate fluently in the future.

Well THAT sucks.

I was thinking perhaps a variation on this:

Quote:
Transliterator
Model: Consolidated
Learning Systems
Transliterator
Type: Language
interpretation unit
Skill: Communications
Cost: 1,200 (includes
500 most common
languages), 500
(module with 500
additional languages)
Availability: 3
Game Notes: An
Easy communications
roll is required to
properly select up to
20 different languages
to be tracked. Device is
effective to a range of 10 meters, but aural receptors focus
on nearest sounds first. Individual displays of phrase or
word translations can either remain in place until manually
cleared by user or clear after a pre-set delay period of
15 seconds. This unit’s database contains 500 specific
“common” languages and dialects.

It wouldn't have to be a droid, and could be equipped to translate on a secure frequency...

Not really it's like wanting to play a Jedi and do bad things without getting smacked by the Dark Side, it isn't how the game works. The best characters have flaws as well and it that means they fail sometimes then that is all well and good.

What would suck is no matter how good your character was they never succeeded at anything because all your dice rolls were always ones.

Aye. It's actually a big part of why I wanted to play Wookiee.
I was discussing a droid to use specifically with Tiny to smooth our training sessions only, not even for really communicating with people or the group at large... and that was going to make things too easy. So the rest of ya are just screwed on the language front until ya learn Wink

Or Rownn could learn Esoomian, pretty sure his vocal chords could handle it Razz

Fortunately, Zinn has already learned Shirywook; so now when I read what Rownn says, it isn't just for my own personal curiosity! lol

I haven't found anything on the net about it and haven't gone into great depth creating it myself but yes I imagine it is similar in that it sounds animalistic and emotional to the uneducated while being an actual language.

I don't know that I'd go so far as to classify it as tonal though. I wouldn't have thought that a different tone on the pronunciation of a word would change the meaning (except in terms of sarcasm and the like).

Yup, some of the Asian (Chinese more specifically) languages are tonal; this goes over the 4 tones in Mandarin - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BizuZh0DWCk . Different tones can have radically different meanings, not just in intent, but entire definition.

Not Garolf really. He started out with 4D so he was more likely to understand Rownn. And I did give him a reason in his character sheet for it.

Edit: On the subject of language I've always thought that folks don't have to put any D into native languages. And most folks tend to speak, or at least understand, Basic so there's usually no putting any Ds in Basic. So we do have that option in our disguises.

Yes, I assume everyone with the vocal cords to do so can speak basic. Smile

Yeah, I figure Shistavanens have the vocal cords since I seem to recall Riv Shiel speaking Basic in the X-Wing books and Lak Sivrak did so in Tales from the Mos Eisley Cantina and I believe Caet Shrovl did so in I, Jedi. I know Wookieepedia says they were fluent in both Shistavanen and Basic but were only literate in their own language. Somehow I don't think they were fluent in just their language as I think one of those three was seen reading something in Basic which one of the human characters was also able to read.
