Most people seem to like 2R&E, but some people like the "stun" rules of 1E and a few of us like the scale rules in 2E. On the whole, I think 2R&E is the most popular rule set, while 2E is my favorite. _________________ Or that excessively long "Noooooooooo" was the Whining Side of the Force leaving him. - Dustflier

I'd go introductory for first-timers. _________________ Or that excessively long "Noooooooooo" was the Whining Side of the Force leaving him. - Dustflier

I've always done the R&E for my first time players. I was known for running a short campaign each winter for newbie roleplayers. I'd give them a sheet that briefly explained how to do character creation and advancement (which I now have up on my 4shared), and then I'd give a brief rundown on how the rules worked, and we'd go from there. We'd do a small campaign of 3-5 adventures to let them get the hang of what roleplaying was all about and how the rules worked.
The rules for the R&E are simple enough as it is that you don't necessarily need to go to 1st Ed. I never really had a problem with any of my newbies using the R&E, although the chemistry of the group may have been a factor. I had 3-4 people who had either never roleplayed before or had only done it once or twice. Then I made sure that I had a veteran gamer who was intimately familiar with the rules at the table as well. _________________ __________________________________

I'd start with whatever rules you want to run. The rules are simple enough as they are. What's may be more important for new players is to introduce rules incrementally by having the characters do something in the first session that involves some non-combat skills and maybe a short combat. Add in a chase scene in a later session to introduce the vehicle movement rules. Then add in spaceship movement and combat in an even later session. The goal is not to overwhelm them with learning rules in any one session, but to introduce the rules gradually by having something new in each session. |

Yes this why I was thinking 1e rules, because everything is simple and fast flowing. Then after a few adventures, start introducing more rules. _________________ Star Wars "Fall of the Order" Actual Play Podcast - https://rollhighordie.com/category/swfallorder/

That's basically how I did it. Heck, 6 or 7 modules later and a year or two in real life, and I'm still introducing new rules as I come to understand/sit down and really research them. _________________ Star Wars: Marvels, the audio drama: www.nolinecinemas.com

But you know what? As old as this game is, and how much fun it is to play. Its always cool to find something new to use and its like the game takes on a new level in your mind of "awesomeness"
But on that note, I think I am going to use the 1E rules for my group, its the one I started on, and played the most, then draw them into Revised like my former GM did. _________________ Star Wars "Fall of the Order" Actual Play Podcast - https://rollhighordie.com/category/swfallorder/

I've always started on 2nd Ed. R&E, usually for the first game I run something like the Pirates of Prexiar out of the main book. My players have always enjoyed the infiltrating of the pirate camp. It usually gets the gaming juices flowing, so to speak.
The nice thing about all of the WEG Star Wars editions, are that they're all incredibly simple. If you can do basic addition & subtraction, you're golden. I have had some players who don't like to think, so they don't do well keeping track of their MAPs. They generally needed me as GM to tell them what to roll, but all in all very simple. _________________ RR

I hear ya, but as a GM, you have to keep track of so many things, that sometimes its nice to have a player just be able to know what to roll.
What really burns me is that damn D20 system, made things so simple in Saga edition that people dont have to think beyond rolling a D20 adding + or - that they dont want to try the D6 system _________________ Star Wars "Fall of the Order" Actual Play Podcast - https://rollhighordie.com/category/swfallorder/

I can't stand feat trees. |

Yes, it does. I also hate feats... I'm not a fan of systems designed to be used on a board with minis. Minis are usually too distracting. _________________ RR

Minis help me to visualize the scene and think about things like cover and movement. We tend to use integrated movement rather than shoot then move as in the RAW. Unfortunately the minis don't work so well when we aren't physically around the same table now that we play via Skype video. |
