Um...Kage is kind of going to go ballistic when he figures out what Daryn is doing. Imagine if you were a cab driver and someone got into your cab and asks to go to 4th and Main. As soon as you start driving, the guy leans over the seat and starts reprogramming your radio station presets, adjusting your mirrors, and changing your A/C settings. When you stop for gas along the way, the guy grabs the keys out of the ignition and pops into the hardware store next door to get a copy of your car key made for his own use. This is kind of like that, but multiplied by a hundred or so. This is Bri'tan and Kage's personal, privately-owned spaceship/home/livelihood---not Daryn's (nor the Galactic Republic's). Daryn hired Bri'tan for transport services...he didn't buy the ship from him. He has to understand that at some point, or Kage will end up finding a way to circumvent his life preservation programming and try really, really hard to space Daryn and blame it on a faulty airlock seal. If handled properly, Kage will learn to be okay with Daryn handling some of the duties around the ship (maybe even in the cockpit), but he's not going to be okay with someone screwing with his and Bri'tan's ship, much less slave-rigging systems to their personal arm-mounted computer. Not even if they ask nicely (which Daryn hasn't). _________________ Arek | Kage |

I personally dont see it that way. I do understand where you are coming from and that some would indeed see things in that way.
Although Daryn may not have asked nicely in so many words, he DID mention his plans to the captain and actual owner of the ship. He also did not get told no. Daryn plans to make sure the modifications work, then not only show Bri'tan what he has done but also make such capabilities available to him once they can pick up the parts required to build Bri'tan a similar device. It may not be of as much use to Bri'tan as to Daryn (I am not looking at his stats atm) but with Bri'tan's penchant for tech, Daryn feels it would be a more than acceptable payment for him to give Bri'tan that ability as well. Heck, Daryn could even modify a datapad for Bri'tan, rather than having to build him a complete computer...and could do it faster.
Obviously Kage is proprietorial about the ship. The problem is that not only are droids not seen as true sentients, and therefore with very few exceptions are not allowed to own anything, Kage has already come dangerously close to violating the programming which is supposed to prevent him from harming sentients. He is obviously not a droid that gets its memory wiped regularly (if ever), which will cause complications in that department. However, any such things Daryn does or might do with the ship, he will most certainly cover with Bri'tan...NOT with Kage. In fact, if Bri'tan wants the changes and Kage tries to interfere, Daryn will certainly address it with the captain. Already Bri'tan has said he wanted people manning stations on the bridge, and Kage has interfered. Daryn may not yet know what was going on in full, but he will eventually. |

I don't recall Bri'tan saying that he wanted anyone in the cockpit; I do remember Bri'tan telling Daryn that he could keep an eye on sensors or comm if he needed something to do. There may be another conversation that I'm not remembering, in which case I apologize. Kage didn't "interfere" with Daryn's use of the sensor station; he prevented Daryn from interfering with the scan that he was already running, which he was doing as a result of a direct order from Bri'tan. Kage wouldn't have locked out the manual controls if he wasn't already using the sensor suite himself; he's not purposely antagonizing Daryn. I'm still unclear on why Daryn did this; if he sat down and saw that there was already a scan in progress, I wouldn't think he'd cancel the scan to begin his own unless he just didn't realize what he was looking at when he saw the previous scan in progress. There were other tasks that could have been attended to rather than appropriating a station already in use. Chief among these is the shields; no one has raised them yet, despite the fact that there is a very real and present danger to the ship. Kage is engrossed in his hyperspace calculations, so I haven't been able to have him ask that someone raise them, but it would probably be prudent if someone wanted to feel useful. The comm was also unmanned; it probably wouldn't have hurt to hail the freighter we nearly collided with (at the outset; I realize Daryn is responding to an incoming hail now). Or even just commanding; Daryn's role (as I understand it) is kind of like the commander of any operation/vessel (with the aforementioned caveats that this is a civilian-owned, for-hire transport vessel); he makes the decisions and figures out the course of action, then has the crew/subordinates carry that plan out. Obviously on a vessel with such a small crew, it never hurts to have an extra hand performing duties that the regular crew is too busy to bother with at that exact moment, but you get the gist of what I'm getting at.
You're right that Kage isn't a sentient organic and doesn't have legal rights (ownership or otherwise), but he's Bri'tan's droid, and currently his best friend. Based on Bri'tan's personality (as well as Kage's history/background), Guardian_A and I have come up with a slightly different dynamic (more interesting, in my opinion) than the usual master-droid relationship. Aboard the Nerf and in Bri'tan's eyes, Daryn may find that Kage has more leeway/rights than he is used to droids possessing. I won't speak for Guardian_A, but he and I have touched on this in our discussions on how the two characters interact. My point is that, true or not, Kage feels that the ship is his and Bri'tan's domain, and that should not be encroached upon by anyone, especially a fare. That said, if Kage is out of line (which he will be on occasion, I'm sure), then I'm certainly not going to take offense to you having Daryn confront Bri'tan about his droid's attitude or misconduct.
As to Kage coming "dangerously close to violating the programming which is supposed to prevent him from harming sentients", he didn't just come dangerously close---he directly violated his life preservation programming. I didn't think about it until a couple of days after I posted him zapping Lurk, but he turned on a device he had designed to fry mynocks, knowing that there was a sentient being on the business end of it. That was actually unintentional, but I figured if I had to, I could retcon it by saying that his life preservation programming got corrupted to some extent before the campaign started (see Kage's background for more info). That was my slipup, sorry. If anyone catches something like that when I do it, call me on it; I'll either explain or fix it...I'd rather edit a post while it's still fresh than have to retcon it later.
Now, would someone please raise the shields?! _________________ Arek | Kage |

Heheh....yes. Maybe that's the prerequisite for Kage violating his life preservation programming; that it be done in such a way that an external observer would find it humorous. Or if electricity is involved. Mmm, tingly. _________________ Arek | Kage |

Rather than add to the confusion, I just edited Kage's last message to Bri'tan to include the 30-second ETA on the calculations. Hope that's all right. _________________ Arek | Kage |

Okay...trying this for the twelve millionth time. Tried to post last night and reception went stupid, so my phone wouldnt send it.
We have had a bit of a misunderstanding. First, you are right. Bri'tan volunteered those positions if we needed something to do. Since Daryn is not only a newly minted Knight, but also a new commander, he is not at all accustomed to having people perform around him while he does not help. So it is natural for him to pitch in. Since Nihl chose communication, Daryn took sensors. Since that was 'his' station, when he went to the bridge he naturally went to that station. Of course he wouldn't interfere with an in-progress scan; that would be counterproductive. However, what I was envisioning was being able to upload the program using the equivalent of opening another window on our own computers, a task that can indeed be done while the computer is performing other functions. So, apologies for the confusion.
Also, Daryn is not trying to 'take over' the ship. Right now he is trying to come up with ways to either make money or things to do to help out on the ship that will defray what he has to pay...at least until and unless he is able to establish a continual income he can draw on to pay Bri'tan. He figures this remote access thing is going to be a huge boon to Bri'tan, who is obviously enamored with technology. Once Daryn has the programs in place and knows they work, he plans to demonstrate them to Bri'tan, show him how they work, and offer to modify a datapad or a wrist communicator to give Bri'tan this same capability. His initial plans included offering to write software to give Kage the same ability, so that when he and the captain might be outside their ship and in need of an expedited entry/getaway, Kage can remotely begin preflights and other such functions once within a certain range from the ship (range to be determined with Wookiee). Although, of course, with the way things are going right now Kage would appear to be against any such uploads, probably being suspicious of Daryn's intentions.
Basically, we are gonna need better communication. Daryn has mentioned doing this right to the captain, who didnt tell him no. Daryn's intentions are actually good, but as things arent being discussed with Kage, the droid is gonna go ballistic if he finds out before Daryn can show it off to the captain. And so on and so on.
I just want the players to be aware that Im not trying to take over the bloody ship. This has the capacity for some great roleplaying. It also has the capacity to kill the mission before it truly starts. Ah, the drama...lol |

I wouldn't sweat it, Skyler. It's just an uppity droid. Ionise it into submission, and if that don't work, I'm sure the lightsaber will.
now... can we shoot the bad guys? _________________ Giblet Blizzard |

I think Kage just has a problem with anyone encroaching in "his" territory.
As for Bri'tan. Right now, he really isnt thinking about that situation, he just said "ok" so he wouldnt have to deal with it. Once he sees the extent of Daryn's intrusion on the ships systems, he's probably going to be a little upset about it. On the other hand, once he has a little time to think about it, he'll probably make extensive use of the remote access himself, even if he closely monitors anyone else's.
No matter, its turning out to be a lot of fun watching the little drama unfold! |

I figured Bri'tan's reaction would be more along these lines, being the technophile that he is. Besides, if he likes it enough, he can just tell Kage that Daryn is going to upload the program into his databanks and deal with it that way. lol |

Well, I don't know about anyone else, but I am getting a kick out of picturing the back-and-forth going on in the bridge while the battle is starting.
