In the Crystal star novel, the main baddie has configured lightsabers he makes to where only someone with the force can activate it.

BUT has anyone made a rule for how to do this?

Wouldn't it just be a case of having the on off switch being internal so you'd need to know where it was and have telekinesis to toggle the switch?

Yep. Count it as a MAP. Though for someone using their own lightsaber, I would assume they practice this a lot.* So I would allow drawing and activing to occur at the same time, it would just take an additional action penalty for having to use TK.

* Similar to the fact that most of us probably don't require two separate actions to draw a pistol and take it off safety.

I thought it was in a fan sourcebook or one of the conversion books. Will have to check, kinda sounds like something that oughta be in the Jedi Academy Training Manual and possibly converted to D6

It shouldn't just be a rule for concealed switches, ala the Crystal Star. A Jedi could use a similar ability on a lightsaber with an external switch that was out of reach, or to manipulate controls or other buttons...

I kinda wonder about ways to activate sabers with other powers. What if there was an electrical switch inside a sith's lightsaber, and it was activated with force lightning, or things like that. That way you could make a saber that even most Jedi couldn't use.

Yes, my rule is: Don't do anything out of that novel. It's an abomination! Didn't that baddie only actually use his trick saber on Threepio? How lame.

Seriously, I would think that a simple Telekenesis roll for an internal switch would do the trick. Nothing fancy needed for that.

No, but it should give some idea. Unfortunately what I found I pretty much had to go into the WotC instead of the conversion to get and it's just a X Use the Force check (X= DC 5) to activate the concealed switch. Since the switch is imbedded in the lightsaber, I'd say in D6 it's as already been said, use TK or Force Push to activate the switch at a set difficulty. Which would work for an external switch as well.

As for an MAP, if your just turning it on with a Force power then why? If you're turning it on and using it for defense or attack at the same time then I see that as two actions. But activating alone is a single action to me.

DC 5 in WOTC would probably be the equivalent of a very easy alter roll.

Once familiar with it, free action. Seriously.

But would it be a control roll, alter roll or something else?

Well, control is limited to the character's own body, and since he is manipulating something outside of himself, Alter is the obvious choice.

It requires telekinesis --> hence alter.

For a little while, way back when we made our house rule that the Force power "lightsaber combat" ignited the blade.
You hold the hilt in your hand searching for the enemy combatant, when you see him you roll for "lightsaber combat" and this ignites your blade, using the Force.

But then as you get to know the hilt recreations and props used in the movies and fandom you realise all those switches probably do something.

So the new rule is telekinesis. Very easy if you know what you're doing, free action most of the time but some Jedi masters may feel you are relying on the Force too heavily when it is not absolutely necessary, which contradicts the humility aspect of Jedi.

Poor jedi with the internal saber switch after stepping into a Ysalamiri bubble.
