In star wars credits are the money but is this electronic money like that used for bank transfers or is it encoded on chips? |

Credits can be cold hard cash, sticks with values of credits "encoded" on them, paper chits with credit amts wrote on and certified (bank notes). Heck even just an account number. _________________ Confucious sayeth, don't wash cat while drunk! |

How would an independent planet (or planetary collective) start a credit account with a galactic bank or pay for things if they just entered the galactic stage?

Typically banks in the real world are very conservative about extending credit. Essentially they want to makes sure there is an assured way for the bank to recover the loan. Look at it from the galactic bank's perspective. What if they extend credit to this independent planet or collective and the new entity just takes the money and refuses to pay the bank back. The bank would have to go to war to try to get repaid. (Which is probably why the Banking Clans in the Clone Wars have armies. Too many risky loans from the governmental loan department. )
One way to do that would be for the independent planet or collective to deposit items of value with the galactic bank or create a lien against receivables located within the galactic bank's home jurisdiction. The galactic bank could then provide cash against the valuable collateral.
In the real world I've had to work with both sending/receiving wire transfers and establishing new bank accounts in foreign countries. Both can be surprisingly time consuming - typically 24-48 hours or 2 business days for the wire transfer and sometimes weeks for a brand new bank for a newly incorporated company.
Hope that helps. Maybe someone more experienced in international finance may be able to provide some additional thoughts. |

Normally they would have to acquire something for collateral up front from said banking institution... that then gives them X amt of credit that could be drawn. The longer they stay 'good customers' the more that credit can expand. _________________ Confucious sayeth, don't wash cat while drunk! |
