Say you have a combat session go bad for your players, and 2 or 3 of the 6 (maybe 7) character 'kop the bullet'. When they make up their new ones, do you have them make base characters starting from scratch, or do you give them a 'boost'..

EG. After going over all the other characters, the lowest 'powered' character has a total of 12+2 above his base attributes, worth of skills all around, while the average 'power' rating is around 14-15d. DO you have the player start fresh with only the 7d they normally get, or would YOU!!!! start them higher, say 10d, so they are not too weak compared to the others on the table, but also still not as high as the lowest surviving character?!?!?!!?

Basic characters, let it serve as a lesson. Maybe they'll be more careful, less hasty in resorting to a blaster.

On a side note, when you have multiple questions that all go in the same forum, why do you need to make seperate forum posts for each? why not combine them in one thread and reduce forum clutter?

I thought the seperation of the questions would make it easier to answer them, as some people have problems with large threads and lots of cut'n'pasting'.... But in future, i will do so. Cool! Smile

Basic characters.

Without the risk of failure, there is no hope of glory.

For me, it depends on the situation. In some cases, I would make it basic characters.
In other cases, why would the party be getting fresh and unexperienced people on the party. They need replacements. They wouldn't pay top credit for a woefully under-powered NPC to do a job for them, would they?

So I take it as a case by case basis.

A reasonable point. Usually, my players aren't specifically part of an organized military, be it Rebellion or Republic, but freelancers and adventurers caught in the turmoil Given this, they usually meet the other PCs in the course of their travels, and meeting a fresh faced an eager young kid looking for adventure, in light that they just lost a comerade, can be bitersweet. Usually they allow the new perosn to tag along for a while, until they grow tired of him, or he proves himself.
In a military/paramilitary game though, it is quite possible that fresh faced recruites are all that is available. So, the PC group must adapt and train some new rookies to fill their ranks and bring them up to speed.

I might consider a few bonus D on a replacement character, if the rest of the PCs had significant advancement under their belt. Just to keep things up to speed.

They would if that's all they can find.

I usually oppose boosting characters because it denies the player one of the most basic fun parts of the game - seeing your character grow. It also denies role playing oportunity for the "old salts" to have to watch out for the "greenhorns" until they prove themselves and become full members of the team.

I think I'd say the players who have lost a character should restart with a baic character since their characters would be able to very quickly find a teacher. Unless, of course, they have another character from a previous adventure who is alive at the same time as the current adventure, and should be about the right age too, then I'd say to let them use that character rather than start from scratch. I mean, if the adventure was set five years after the current adventure, then a character from a previous adventure wouldn't be as advance in this adventure as they would be at the end of that one. But if the previous adventure ended either before the current one started (in terms of in game time rather than in terms of playing) or ended shortly before the players character from the current adventure died, then they'd certainly be the right age and probably be fairly close to the current PCs.

RESURRECTION.

For our new folk. How do you handle this situation?
Do you base a new pc into an existing group by way of Die above starting the average PC has?
Base it on some average of CP awarded? Spent?

If a regular player lost a cherished character, I'd probably have them make a starting character and then award them additional CP.

The replacement character should definitely be on the same "level" as the rest of the party. Anything else usually causes too many headaches.

Plus, I don't game with people who would require further "punishment" after loosing a character.

Also, I never use Dice to create characters, only CPs.

So other than 'changing the name (and poss race/template etc) its just bob 1 dies, bob 2 shows up exactly the same as bob1?

No, of course not. Why would you even ask/assume that?

Garhkal... I believe I said it once already, but...

Observing your general attitude towards and approach/position on different aspects of GMing... I can only cringe in sympathy at the kind of "player" you must be normally exposed to, and offer my heartfelt condolences.

I am really sorry if this comes across as patronizing or offensive... It's just, I time and again find our GMing styles separated by this unfathomable gulf, and based on the specifics of your posts I can only conclude your attitude must be a defensive reaction to some traumatic GMing experiences. Why else would anybody distrust and seek to "keep in line" his own players to such a, from my position, drastic degree? If I found my players driving me to such actions and attitudes in order to have a normal session, I would stop gaming with those people instantly.

If nothing else, it reminds me to be thankful for my own good fortune in finding like-minded people to game with. Blessed be Eris.

Maybe its from all my adnd gaming that has formed my mindset to where when someone dies (or a new player shows up) they shouldn't start at the same "general level" as everyone else (or make up a new pc to replace the fallen at that same level).
