So i recently picked up a ton of old WEG books from a used bookstore, and I'm reading through the Twin Sons of Kiva for the first time. Interesting read. More of a collection of adventure ideas then a standard supplement like the Cracken's books or Galladinium's or Pirates & Privateers. Though I get why it's classified as a supplement rather than an adventure module as it provides a setting for a series of adventures for your players rather than a single adventure module.

Anyway, the book spends time describing the Lazeria system. Lazer-ia. Get it? Lazer! It's like Laser, but intentionally misspelled! Anyway, there is a species native to the planet that lives underwater that the human civilization on the surface know nothing about. These are the Akwin.

Now, I'm not saying that the flannelled one used this as inspiration for the Gungans, he may not have even known about this supplement for the roleplaying game that was published in 1993, six years before the release of the Phantom Menace. I hadn't read it between 1993 and 2024, but then, I didn't have access. Anyway, the similarities are striking. My first thought was the author was ripping off Naboo, then I did a little math and realized if anyone was ripping off anyone else, it was the other way around. Not really the point of this post, just something worth mentioning.

The Akwin have a RIDICULOUS stat block. And I'm saying that as the biggest advocate of min-maxing on these boards. It's crazy. Their maximum attributes are some of the highest for all species. And I thought the Bith were bad. The only thing keeping them relatively balanced is they start with 12D attributes, which is the galactic average. But then, balance is not the word I would use for alien stat blocks in WEG Star Wars. Also, they need a 2D minimum in each attribute, so they can't actually max out two of these attributes.

Without further adieu

Akwin

Dexterity 2D/6D
Knowledge 2D/4D
Mechanical 2D/3D
Perception 2D/5D
Strength 2D/7D
Technical 2D/3D

Okay, so knowledge, mechanical, and technical are pretty normal, but 6D dex, 5D perception, & 7D strength? And I thought the Esoomians were bad. Well, to be fair, the Esoomians are bad, but the highest dex and highest strength caps in the game in one species? That's nuts.

The rancorpit alien collection changes these stats by assigning them to different attributes in what I assume is a typo. The same typo is found in the D6Holocron Wiki.

Imagine a toon that managed to max out all these stats? Crazy.

1. In 1993 Second Edition was still in flux and this may have been a transitional set of stats.
2. William of Occam would say its a blatant math error because Dave Marron was rushing.
3. Dave Marron may have been wanting to stand out and this race slipped past the editors.

Sounds like we need to reach out to Dave Marron for an interview and some answers.

Yes. Yes they do. But they are only a min-maxer's wet dream under RAW-supremacist GMs. Sensible GMs change stats to something more reasonable.

As far as the speculation that this species was an inspirations for Gungans, I find that unlikely but it certainly isn't impossible. After all, the Star Wars EU was owned by Lucas and he could and did use what he wanted from it (and likewise disregard what he wanted from it) for the sake of creating his films.

An obvious influence on TPM was the rough draft of the original Star Wars script, one that was more overtly influenced by The Hidden Fortress in some ways. The old samurai is now Qui-Gon instead of Obi-Wan, the Jedi and Sith clans, the 14-year old queen, etc. A more likely inspiration for Gungans was the original swamp-monster version of Han Solo from that screenplay. Gungan species designs seem most inspired by the needs for the character of Jar Jar. Most alien characters are designed as individual characters first (and species second if applicable to the story).

The body of evidence (the entire published WEG SW line) makes it clear that there was no such thing as centralized game stat editing/approving, other than the proper formatting and to make sure game rules are followed by it. There are quite a lot of ridiculous stats in this game. Yes, there are always deadlines and perhaps some of them would have been better realized if the author had more time. But I'm convinced some authors don't really have a mind for game mechanics and are justing writing because that is the job they got hired for. There is no evidence suggesting any WEG author's stats were ever edited to not be ridiculous.

If anyone does reach out, please let me know so I can hide this thread. I would hope that any such interview with the author would not include rude sentiments along the lines of "Your stats are ridiculous."
