Sling.

I have often though how increibly impractical it would be to have to have to hold your gun constantly.

we know from pistold that these come with holsters, and we have seen some EU examples of troppers having a holster for carbines, but then comes the repeaters and the rifles....

This also brings me into some form of encumbrence system, it is a limit how much you can carry especually with no sling.

I've often wondered, why most rifles we see in the films NEVER have a sling, even a 1 point one..

TLDR Version
George nor anyone in the prop department did not think about it, or consider it a priority.

Longer Version
In my opinion they just did not put that much of a priority on making things that realistic to actual tactics or gunplay.

The weapons are old ww2 guns with greebles on them - most of them did not have slings or the slings had been lost over the decades.

I think often as gamers we can tend to read a lot into things in the movies - when - and don't get me wrong - I love my space western - a lot of things we see may be more the result of what was practical to shoot, rather than a conscious story or setting based choice.

(I say this as someone who has been involved in both stage and film productions behind the scenes - while some decisions and choices are very well thought out or scripted - often times - a huge amount is not).

Personally, I would think the troopers would add slings - especially ones who are on patrol, or have to use them for longer periods of time.

I remember discussing gun slings here in recent years but I cannot find the thread right now. Anyway, Kenner agreed with you in 1980:

Maybe in Star Wars they retract into the weapon at one of the two contact points? I am not bothered by not seeing these very much in the films. Since the '80s, pistols generally come with holsters and larger personal weapons generally come with slings in my SWU. Done and done. No muss, no fuss.
