Can a PC use Character points to increase a blaster's range? Are there official rules for this somewhere?

Official rule is that the max range is the max range.
It could be ruled that through Blaster Repair a range increase could be made, but range is based on physical parameters of the weapon, it has nothing to do with the character. Using Character Points just doesn't make much sense.

Perhaps I should have been more specific: Use character points to modify the weapon (IE the rulebooks show how to increase the damage by spending CP's and money), not use character points during a combat round.

Oh, use CPs for extended skill rolls... don't see why not.

I think he's referring to First Edition, where you could actually spend Character Points to increase the stats of your equipment.

For example, if I have a Blaster Pistol and I spend 4 CPs, I can take the damage code from 4D to 4D+1.

I must admit that was one thing I kinda liked from First Ed.

And that was one thing I [I]didn't[/] like. I never could understand how my Character Points could up grade equipment.

Yeah, I don't like that either. Using character points to increase your Blaster Repair skill to better you chances at upgrading your weapon's range makes sense, but just pumping the CPs directly into the blaster is a very artificial way of going about it.

Wow, really?? That makes absolutely NO sense whatsoever.

Then are there rules for using Blaster Repair to improve the range?

Not that I've seen explicitly stated, but I can't see why it couldn't be done. It could be done at the cost of some ammo, incurring a fire-rate, or something like that due to the need for a more constrained envelope, or more exit power or what have you.
How far the range is increased could be a function of the distance increased... though I don't think I'd allow anything beyond say; 50m?

Not officially, no. But that doesn't stop us from doing some homebrew stuff. Smile

IIRC of the weapon mod rules in the core book, it did list inc range as one of the options. I think it was something like

+5% to range, - Easy diff, 10% of weapon cost
+10% to range - Mod diff, 15% of weapon cost, -1/6 of shot capacity
+15% to range - Difficult diff, 20% of weapon cost, -1/6 of shot capacity
+20% to range - Very difficult diff, 25% of weapon cost, -1/5 of shot capacity
+25% to range - Heroic diff, 35% of weapon cost, -1/4 of shot capacity

The shot capacity lessening was to show that the more range you get, the more energy is used to acquire that range.

I know its not using character points but you can use a blaster repair skill. On page 62 in the 2nd edition revised and expanded rules it shows a chart for weapon range increases. Here is the table if you dont have the R&E book. The cost is based on the original cost of the weapon.

RANGE INCREASE DIFFICULTY COST
+5% Easy 5%
+10% Moderate 10%
+15% Difficult 15%
+20% Very Difficult 20%
+25% Heroic 25%
