Cal brings the metallic case back to Toba in his quarters later that evening. He is followed by a black security droid.

"Come in. Door's open. Did you have any success with that box? You brought it with you, right?"

The room is very dark, lit only by some of the lights and blinking leds from the systems monitors Toba has linked up to his cabin. Toba is sitting on his bed, reviewing some comunications specs, ticking out all the systems that are bound to burst into flames when Khabak attempts his new comm trick.

Zerran follows Cal in, and politely says "I Dont think we have been formally introduced yet. My name is Zerran, and I am pleased to meet you." and extends a hand to Toba.

Toba stares at the droid's extended hand with a blank look in his face. He turns to Cal as he speaks:

"What's that thing and what is it still doing here?"

"Toba," Cal says patiently, "This is Zerran. He's a new member of the crew."

[Gry Sarth]

Toba puts away his reading material and jumps out of his bed.

"Oh, no, it's not! It's bad enough that we have Khabak, but at least he can cook a decent meal. I'll see to it that Max doesn't stay around much longer either. But now THIS?! What IS this black monstrosity? Looks like an assassin unit to me. I bet it has a concealed blaster somewhere, and ain't afraid to use it."

Turning to the droid.

"Don't you?!"

looking at Toba, Zerran says "I am a security droid, so yes I do have a blaster in my chest. I will only use it if I or my companions are attacked. I will never use it in aggression" Taking back his hand as he knows the little Utai will not be shaking it.

"Don't fool yourself, droid. A blaster is only ever used aggresively, ask your next target."

Toba inspects Zerran bottom to top. Then speaks as acidly as he is capable.

"So, you have a blaster concealed in your chest, eh? It figures. Guess that didn't leave much room left for a heart, did it, killer?"

Zerran recoils slightly from the comment. He is used to some prejudice but not to this degree. His companions comment hits home, reminding him of his lost body. He recovers by saying "No my friend, I am not organic, therefore i do not need a cardiovascular system. And there are some times which you must kill to save someone else. If a stormtrooper were about to shoot you, would you not want me to shoot him to save you?"

"I know killing is a necessary part our lives here. But with your lack of heart, and I don't mean vascularly, I doubt your ability to choose your targets when the time comes. A 1 can turn into a 0 much easier and faster than love can turn into hate."

"But I wouldn't expect you to understand that, I would just have you off my ship."

Zerran looks Toba directly in the eye then says "I understand this concept very well. I have cared very deeply for someone of the past." He adds, pausing for a second with a note of sorrow "But the have all been killed, and there was nothing that I could do to save them. I would have gladly given my life to save even one of them"

"You speak pretty words for a droid, but they are more hollow than that empty chest of yours. What do you know of giving your life? You have none to trade. Or of caring deeply for someone? You will never know love. You are black, cold, hard and lifeless. And I fear your companions will eventually become the same."

"Far to many of my companions have fallen already. I will not let that happen to this crew." He says a bit distanly, then adds with more conviction" Do you not believe that a droid, programmed by organics, would be able to feel as their creators did?"

Toba snaps drily:

"No. Certainly not. It might be able to pull a decent imitation, but it would be only skin-, or plate-, deep."
