Action! Figures! (my SW figure collection)

Here is my current list of Star Wars Action Figures. My collection is mostly complete (never say never). There are all carded (or otherwise with all original packaging and pieces), with the exception of my only two remaining vintage figures which I included below because they are collectible even loose. My Jabba the Hutt is out of the box on display, but the toy is in mint condition and I still have the box (not mint) and Han figure with inner packaging for it, so it counts as carded. I also have a bunch of loose figures from the modern era of SW action figures (which began in 1995) on display on top of a couple bookshelves, but I didn't bother listing them here because they aren't worth anything. All are the standard 3.75" scale except the last two which are noted.

Star Wars figures may not mean very much to a lot of adult fans without kids, but for me it is a big part of my nostalgia for the Star Wars of my childhood. The action figures and the storybooks were the main two ways I kept the franchise alive in my mind in between the classic films. Action figures were the first Star Wars roleplaying adventures I played with my brother and other neighborhood kids growing up.

I don't think I have much of a collection anymore. I do have a set of the new retro figs to keep carded, and a 1980's MOC Squidhead. The rest of my "carded" collection is just the stuff I haven't let my kids open yet. It's my stash for future presents.

I also have roughly 90 very heavily played with Kenner ones from my childhood. I recently unloaded the duplicates and kept an almost complete set. There were a couple we never got, and a couple that we got but have gone missing in the intervening decades.

90 vintage figures! Wow! I should mention that my two vintage figures are in good shapes physically except for the paint being worn off some. The Blue Snaggletooth is the better of the two with a lot of the silver paint of the boots being worn off. The Boba Fett is so bad it actually looks more like the film.

As kids my brother and I each had our own figures (some common, some not), but even together we never had close to a whole set. I didn't hardly even have any from RotJ because that is about the time I decided I was too old to play with toys and gave most of mine to my brother. Then I formed new gaming group with a couple new friends my age, and I also got into comic books from them, the first thing I really "collected". Those I bagged, boarded, boxed, and kept (some of).

I was cruising Pinterest today and came across these two pictures:



As a kid, stores were heaven stocked to the sky with every toy imaginable. Even if we didn't get anything, my siblings and I enjoyed touching and reading all of the impressive packaging. My parents would get the Wish Book for Sears and JC Penney, and then Christmas would come and we'd enjoy our special gifts, recreating television, movies or comic book stories or make up our own. It was marvelous.

Now, 30+ years later, I roam the aisles at department stores and see one or two pegs with the same three or four figures and feel disappointed.

That would have to be early 80s. I am sure I never saw a display that large in my childhood, but I didn't live in the big city that had a dedicated toy store, so I may never have even visited one. We had department stores that definitely have bigger displays than now, but, not that big. Force Friday 2015 at Toys R Us didn't have that many action figures.

The closest thing I have seen to that was a very similar display of action figures at Star Wars Celebration II in May 2002 (Indianapolis). But it was the Hasbro figures of the day (going back to '95) so not the vintage figures like that.

Star Wars-wise, yeah, these displays were gone after '84, but for other toys, I remember seeing tons of toys up until the early 90's. After that, it seemed like video games were the big push.

Man, I would have just stood there gawking at the wall of awesomeness for HOURS as a kid!

I remember going to the local KMart and getting my first Star Wars action figure....Luke Skywalker!

KMart could have some impressive displays of Star Wars stuff, but the Sears and JC Penney Toy Catalogs were where the real drooling came out!

I think I would have just been stunned into standing there in amazement at a wall of action figures like in those photos.

I started with 4-5 figures. Definitely Han and Luke, and the others were probably Vader, Chewie, and Obi-Wan. My mom told me not to take my figures to school but I smuggled Han and Luke in my pockets one day, and when I pulled Han out in class his head popped off. I tried to glue it back on but it wouldn't stay. I was sad.

I remember eventually getting Greedo, Hammerhead, Walrus Man, Artoo, Threepio, Leia, Stormtrooper, Jawa, Tuskan Raider, X-wing Pilot Luke, Bespin Luke, Jacket Han, Lando, Yoda, Bosk, IG-88, and 4-LOM (mislabeled as "Zuckus" and didn't learn about the error until WEG). And I remember being disappointed that the Easter Bunny brought me a Cloud Car Pilot one year, definitely my least favorite figure. My brother had his own figures and I may be misremembering who had what for some of these (I'm sure we played with each other's figures when the other wasn't around). I definitely remember some Hoth figures around, and maybe 2-1B, Cloud City Leia, and Lobot. I remember really loving Greedo and "Zuckus" back then.

I know I never had many RotJ figures. Maybe Jedi Luke, Ackbar, and the Emperor. That could be it because I stopped playing toys while RotJ was still in the theater. (I had moved on to comic books and RPGs.) I gave all my action figures to my little brother who lost or destroyed them all, but I think he may have also traded some for GI Joe, DC Super Powers, or He-Man figures I remember him having. I remember doing a proof-of-purchase mail-in for a package of action figure weapons.

The only vintage Star Wars figures I still have are at the top of the this thread's OP. The 1979 Boba Fett was from the proof-of-purchase mail-in, and the Blue Snaggletooth had to be a neighborhood trade because we never had the cantina action playset that it came with. I may have traded a Jawa or Tuskan Raider for that.
