A theory I saw on tumblr:
Since Qui-Gon is the only person to mention midichlorians, it may just be that this is a weird theory he has that no one else supports.

Well, they are measurable, so they must exist. And Obi-wan doesn't roll his eyes and say, "not you and your midichlorians again, Master..."

That is not in line with either film that mentions them, TPM or RotS. First of all, Qui-Gon is not the only one that mentions midi-chlorians. In TPM Anakin mentions them when he asks Qui-Gon what the word means because he heard Yoda say it. In RotS, Palpatine mentions them to Anakin in the opera scene when he talks about Darth Plagueis. Palpatine very creepily turned to Anakin as he states that Plagueis could manipulate the midi-chlorians "to create life."
In TPM, Qui-Gon asks Obi-Wan to run an analysis of Anakin's blood to get a midi-chlorian count and Obi-Wan gives him an answer. Over 20,000, and not even Master Yoda has a count that high. Qui-Gon talks to the Jedi High Council about Anakin possibly being conceived by the midi-chlorians and Mace Windu asks if he is referring to the Prophecy of the Chosen One. In TRoS, Obi-Wan, Mace, and Yoda discuss Anakin and the Prophecy, and Yoda said the prophecy could have been misread but didn't state it had anything to do with midi-chlorians not existing.
There are no hints of any characters in any films having any doubts in midi-chlorian existence. I'm guessing you haven't seen the films that many time or recently, so I can see why you may not remember all this. And Lucas mentioned midi-chlorians in 1977 interview, so they existed long before the character of Qui-Gon Jinn (who was not even created until 1997).
Midi-chlorians exist as an indication of Force potential and they are much more quantifiable than mystical energy field of The Force itself. Republic children were tested at birth and the children over a certain threshold were possible candidates for the Jedi Order. In TPM they are symbolic of the symbiotic nature of things, and they serve as a plot point for Anakin's Force potential. There was no question that he had more Midi-chlorians than Yoda or any prior Jedi on record. What that meant was still debatable. All that was known for certain from his count was that Anakin was special.
Midi-chlorians didn't change anything. With or without Midi-chlorians, The Force is exactly the same. I don't have any experience with tumblr. Are they that behind the times? I ask because this "theory" to belittle midi-chlorians, Qui-Gon and TPM is so 20 years ago.

True. WE did see the readings.. So there must be a way to measure them.

Alternative medicine manages to "measure" all sorts of things that don't exist... just sayin'. |
