Obviously, both types of vehicles exist, but I'm curious as to how people differentiate between them. Are skyhoppers a subset of the more general classification of airspeeders? If so, what is it that sets them apart?

I always thought skyhoppers were just a line of Income airspeeders. I never thought of skyhoppers as a general category.

Same here. All Harly's are motor cycles, but not all motor cycles are harly's..

I do not know what a harly is. I do what a Harley-Davidson motorcycle is. (And no, I don't ride a Harley or any other type of motorcycle, either.)

The reason this is on my mind is because, when I did my stat re-write, I wrote two different stats, one for closed-top speeders and one for open-top ones. However, nowhere in my re-write did I address skyhoppers which are very clearly part of the canon (you can see Luke's T-16 parked in the background of the Lars' farm hangar in one scene).
I'm considering making skyhoppers be the small, sporty, low-altitude version of the airspeeder, either closed or open top, but not pressurized, and thus not capable of high-altitude operations.

A harley is short hand for a harley davidson..

I'd make a joke about Spelling Troopers as the SWU equivalent of Grammar Nazis, but they'd probably misspell everything anyways.

To continue the motorcycle analogy, there are racing bikes, dirt bikes, scooters, cruisers, and probably a few more that escape me. Given that, skyhoppers could certainly be a subclass of airspeeders. I never gave the distinction any thought, but it sounds legit to me.
And thank you for planting the Spelling Trooper idea. Now my brain's racing to incorporate them into a future adventure.

I'm not entirely sure how to work it, but the distinction between pressurized, high-altitude-capable craft and low-altitude unpressurized craft would seem to require two different stats, as opposed to lumping them all in together. I'm still not entirely sure how to work it, but this is one possibility.

Perhaps as the Grammar sub-group of the Coalition for Progress. Overt Imperial pressure to uphold higher linguistic standards.

You just made me remember a plot line from the first Lobo comic mini-series. Lobo and his elementary school teacher are kidnapped by a group of military teachers and grammar fanatics who forced them to participate in a deadly spelling bee, where if someone misspells a word, they get shot.
I could see Imperials doing that sort of thing, just replacing the lead with blaster bolts. |

Maybe the distinction is simple like swoops and speeder bikes. Open cockpit and increased maneuverability for skyhoppers (or at least not a pressurized cockpit), but less overall speed. I'm guessing the skyhopper is also cheaper than an airspeeder. But that's just my 2 credits.

That's exactly what I was thinking. If you look at my stat re-write, you'll see that I wrote up stats for two different kinds of airspeeders, one low-altitude and one high-altitude, with rules for atmospheric effects for the open-top speeder getting too high.
