My FLGS just sent me a message that it came in today and I can pick it up Thursday. When I asked if I could go pick it up now, this is what they replied:

I'll let you guys know any differences I notice when I get it, but others that have the originals may have the new set before I do. _________________ *

I took the holiday yesterday to sit down with the books. I started off on 2nd Edition (though the first RPG book I ever owned was the 1st Ed ROTJ Galaxy Guide) so some of the language/rules are different than whats burned into my brain.
I also don't remember any color photo inserts until 2nd Edition? Am I wrong in this? One of the books had a few pages of full color |

1E definitely has color photo inserts. You can probably find images online to confirm. |

I had a chance to take a couple hours off work today so went to my FLGS and picked it up. Here are front and back cover comparisons for both books. (Please forgive the glare on the new RPG core.)
These new books are just absolutely beautiful! The covers seem like an exact replication of the originals as far as material and texture. (I'm pretty sure my originals shined like that when they were new.) The new books are just a tad smaller than the originals, but it is hardly noticeable...
Inside, they are both remarkably faithful reproductions, with at least one error uncorrected. Not all the fonts are exactly the same but nonetheless, this is still a very impressive recreation considering that the originals were made with 1980s technology and some of the files were corrupted. All images are in the same places and the same subject but not all the exact same image. As far as I've noticed so far, each line of text in each column wraps as in the original. They took what they had to work with and painfully reformatted the entire books. I'm pretty sure that the pages appear a bit more crisp than they did originally as a side effect of superior modern paper and printing methods, so even in trying so hard to remain true to the originals they still look a bit better than the originals did in 1987. The blue text in the Sourcebook is a lighter shade of blue than in the original, but I don't remember if the originals were always darker or it has just slowly darkened over the years as a result of the aging process and I didn't notice.
If anyone else who has the originals gets the new ones and notices things I didn't mention, please share. Thanks. _________________ *

Thanks for the pics!
There are some noticeable differences in the photo stock used on the front and back covers of the Sourcebook. Nothing that could possibly bother me, though. |

Look through the new books and found many of the photos have been flipped or replaced with one from the same scene. The picture of the emperor in the gamemaster section is different. The one of Chewie on endor has been replaced with one in the space slug (same change out in the sourcebook). The source book has a lot of different concept art in the space transport and speeder section. And a few new pictures in the Tierfon outpost section. _________________ "EXECUTE ORDER 67. Still waiting for that FF rowboat to arrive in the UK with my copy! But thanks for the pics. Looking forward to getting hold of my copy. _________________ "The ships hung in the sky in much the same way that bricks don't." |

There are two extra skills missing from the character templates. The Wookiee is missing the Wookiee bowcaster skill, and the tough native is missing the black powder pistol skill. The mechanical attribute on the alien student of the force is missing the underscoring between it and the die code so it is justified out to its margin and looks weird. _________________ "EXECUTE ORDER 67. I just did a quick compare between the original and new rulebooks. As has been already noted, quite a few of the photos have been flipped - I never noticed how many of the photos in the original edition were reverse images! You can tell because lots of the right-handed heroes are holding their weapons in their left hands, the Falcon's cockpit is on the wrong (port) side, etc.
I'd disagree slightly with an earlier reviewer in that I think the cover of the new rulebook (at least mine) is a little washed out in comparison to my original copy, and not quite as crisp. Conversely, most of the black and white photos within the new rulebook are a little lighter and show more definition and contrast than in the old one. It's interesting that in quite a few cases they chose almost the same image, but from just a few frames before or after in the movies.
I caught at least two pages where the text did not end with the same word (only slightly off though).
I'm not sure where I put my list of errata, but can anyone confirm that none of the verified errors was corrected? |

If you find it or anyone else has the errata, please share it. I don't recall ever seeing an errata list for this book.
The one I remember noticing yesterday was the first sentence under the Hyperdrive heading on p.6 about Hyperspace that was corrected in the second edition of the book. It remains uncorrected in the new book. _________________ *

Well, hopefully I didn't make that up, Whill! I may be thinking of some responses to questions in the Adventure Journals, and in particular I thought there was a misprint in one of the tables at the end of the 1st Ed. Rulebook. I may be suffering from hibernation sickness, though, or a mild case of the Blue Shadow Virus.
Incidentally, Whill - how does it feel to know that you are a member of a microbiotic species that controls the universe?
