So, I've been doing some thinking about the U-Wing. Depending on which photos you look at, the ship either is or isn't equipped with proton torpedoes. In addition, the designation "UT-60D" implies multiple variants (the "D" is usually part of an alphabetic progression designating sub-types of ships based on the same hull). With that in mind, here is my latest stat for the U-Wing series of ships:

U-WING COMBAT SHUTTLE

Incom's UT-60A, also known as the U-Wing, is a combat-capable light shuttle craft in common use with the Rebel Alliance. Heavily armed and capable of carrying a squad of ground troops, U-Wing's are used in hit-and-fade raids on Imperial installations, as well as transportation for SpecOps and Alliance Intelligence. While fast enough to keep up with other Alliance starfighters, and heavily armed enough to defend itself, the U-Wing is generally used for troop deployment and ground attack, leaving superiority missions to fighters like the X-Wing. In addition, the original design has spawned several derivative models, including a heavy fighter and an intel courier.

Craft: Incom's UT-60A "U-Wing"
Type: Multi-Role Combat Shuttle
Scale: Starfighter (+6D)
Length: 17.5 meters
Skill: Space Transports: U-Wing
Crew: 2 (1 @ +5) & 2 Gunners (optional)
Passengers: 10 (or 10 metric tons cargo capacity)
Consumables: 10 days
Nav Computer: Yes
Hyperdrive Multiplier: x1
Hyperdrive Backup: x10
Maneuverability: 1D+1
Space: 6
Atmosphere: 330; 950 kmh
Hull: 4D
Shields: 1D
Sensors:
Passive: 15/0D
Scan: 25/1D
Search: 40/2D
Focus: 1/3D
Weapons:
2 Medium Laser Cannon (Fire-Linked)
Fire Arc: Front
Crew: 1 (pilot or co-pilot)
Skill: Starship Gunnery
Fire Control: 2D
Space Range: 1-3/12/25
Atmosphere Range: 100m-300m/1.2km/2.5km
Damage: 6D
2 Proton Torpedo Launchers (Fire-Linked)
Fire Arc: Front
Crew: 1 (pilot or co-pilot)
Fire Control: 1D
Space Range: 1/3/7
Atmosphere Range: 30-100/300/700
Damage: 9D
Ammo: 4 per launcher. May select Torpedoes, Space Bombs or Decoys & Probes from this list, depending on Availability.
2 Medium Repeating Blasters
Fire Arc: 1 Front/Left, 1 Front/Right (+5 Difficulty to Hit in Front Arc)
Scale: Character
Crew: 1
Skill: Blaster
Fire Control: None (manually aimed by Gunner)
Atmosphere Range: 3-50/150/400
Rate of Fire: 2D Auto-Fire
Damage: 6D
Note: Can only be fired if the U-Wing's side doors are open, which is only possible in atmosphere. When the doors are open, the door gunner receives the equivalent of 1/4 Cover.

VARIANTS (Use above stats except as noted):
UT-60B/C Heavy Fighter
Crew: 2 (1 @ +5) & 1 Gunner (on C model only)
Passengers: None
Consumables: 8 weeks (5 weeks on C model)
Shields: 2D (on C model only)
Weapons:
Remove 2 Medium Repeating Blasters
Add 1 Dual Blaster Cannon (Fire-Linked) (C model only)
Fire Arc: Rear
Crew: 1
Skill: Starship Weaponry
Fire Control: 3D
Atmosphere Range: 3-50/150/400
Rate of Fire: 2D Auto-Fire
Damage: 3D
Capsule: The UT-60B variant deletes all of the U-Wing's transport capacity to turn the ship into a long range, multi-role combat platform. The troop transport bay is replaced with a small living space, complete with a double bunk, a fresher and a galley and auto-chef. This craft is primarily reserved for strike missions that are normally beyond the reach of the Rebellion's other craft. Unfortunately, combat experience has shown that the -B variant lacked the maneuverability and speed to counter modern TIE fighters. A partial fix was introduced in the UT-60C, which added stronger shields and a rear-firing dual blaster cannon to defend the ship's rear arc against enemy fighters. All -B variants are being upgraded to -C as quickly as possible.

UT-60D Intel Courier
Shields: 2D (Stealth Shields)
Sensors:
Passive: 30/1D
Scan: 50/2D
Search: 80/3D
Focus: 2/4D
Weapons:
Remove 2 Proton Torpedo Launchers
Special Equipment: CommScan Package
In place of the proton torpedo launchers, the UT-60D is equipped with an enhanced commscan system. In addition to enhanced sensor range and local communication ability, the -D is equipped with a hypercomm burst transceiver, allowing it to send and receive pre-recorded messages from practically anywhere in the galaxy, even while in hyperspace. This feature makes the -D variant very attractive to Alliance High Command for missions that have major implications for the Alliance in general.

This series of stats explains (IMO) the differing artwork; most U-Wings were equipped with proton torpedo launchers, but the Intel Courier variants had the launchers removed to make room for the hypercomm system that allows Captain Andor to communicate back and forth with Yavin, even while in hyperspace.

It's also possible that the proton torpedoes weren't on the -A variant either, and were only added to the heavy fighter version.

Thoughts? Other variants?

Ground attack version? Filled to the brim with thermal detonators in nice little wrapped packages with parachutes, or maybe something similar to FFAR pods mounted externally?

Combat engineers version? Carrying a small squad of combat engineers, and maybe a small repulsorlift bulldozer thingy or something?

I considered a straight bomber version, capable of carrying a lot more than just TDs, but ultimately decided against it because its carrying capacity would've been too good. Why have a Y-Wing as an ordnance delivery platform when a bomber U-Wing could carry 5-10 times as much ordnance? I'm not saying it's impossible, but there needs to be an in-universe reason why Y-Wings are the Alliance's varsity when it comes to dropping bombs and firing torpedoes.

I may reconsider it some point, but that's my reasoning for why I didn't do a bomber variant.

Seems like this would just be an -A type carrying combat engineers instead of ground troops...

What about a mobile command platform that has comms similar to the intel one, but also allows for broad-range frequency jamming and encryption, in effect making the squadron it is with "stealth"?

It would also have the ability to direct long-range fire from surface-to-orbit weaponry (or vice versa), or between ships that are otherwise too far from the target to engage effectively (extending the effective range of some of the rebels' big guns).

UT-60/G Gunship version with lower/no passenger capacity and heavy weapon mounts - blaster and rocket pods like a huey gunship ?

UT-60/M Dust Off: a Med Evac version with space for stretchers and medical equipment - maybe an organic medic or a 21-B or some other medical droid aboard.

UT-60/R Rescue: Similar to the M but with winches and enhanced sensors/lights. maybe door mounted tractor beams to lift rubble off of people and such.

Yeah, the U-Wing comes across to me like a Huey in Vietnam, tasked for all sorts of missions, from gunship, to troop carrier, to recon bird, to med-evac.

I could see something like an AEW/ECM support platform, maybe with reduced speed to account for the power being chopped to an enhanced commscan package. Like a cross between an EA-6B and an E-2...

That ends up sounding a lot like the bomber version proposed above...

Alternately, since a multi-purpose vessel capable of performing a wide variety of functions is more useful, these options could be built into the -A platform. Winches, for example, could be included in the basic transport platform to deploy and recover personnel from areas to tight for the U-Wing to land (what with the massive wings), and small tractor beam projectors could be part of the array of support weapons available to door gunners.

So, what I'm thinking for the next step is...

1). Change out the original list for the following variants:
UT-60A Combat Shuttle (with a modular interior for multi-purpose use, the cable lifts from the rescue version, and stats for both the ion blaster from RO and the suggested tractor beam)
UT-60B Fighter Bomber (incorporating the ground support capability with a broader anti-ship combat role, but with reduced speed to reflect the increased ordnance capacity)
    UT-60C Strike Fighter
    UT-60D Intel Courier
    UT-60E CommScan Platform

2). Remove the aft-firing blaster cannon from the Heavy Fighter and make it part of a Dash 2 upgrade available to all five models, as a reaction to heavy losses against front-line Imperial fighters.

Has anyone come across an official deck plan for the U-Wing? There is a very important matter that needs to be answered.

Yup, just as I thought. Consumables should be downgraded.

They have up to 12 people stuffed into something smaller than most studio apartments up to 10 days with no toilet.
