In the 1E game, a player could just make up an alien on the spot. No rules. No backgrounds. Just make up what the thing looks like and fill in any needed details later.
Typically, it was the GM doing this with NPCs. "You see a bipedal, roughly human sized reptile that also incorporates some feathers with its scales. It has painted lips--maybe tattooed and some other decorative marks on its body. And, it wears a long kilt, an open chested light fabric flowing, billowy shirt and has lots of beads. Bead necklaces (multiple). Large bead belt. Bead wrist bands on both hands.
It wears a type of sandal made for its feet. You can see the sharp claws it has, plus the opposable thumb sticking out of the inside of each foot. And, each hand has fingers that end in long, bird-like nails."
But, there's nothing stopping a player from doing this (well, maybe the GM).
Have you ever had a player just make up an alien on the spot during character generation, and then just add to it as needed--finding out things about the alien culture in the game (as the player makes it up--just like a GM would with an NPC)? |

I had a player using the 2D/4D Attribute range, play a humanoid that was a little out of the ordinary.
Basically it was a scaly humanoid with huge eyes and 270/360 vision, basically it became a "human cameleon"
The description was that he changed color with mood, feeling and environment, he was tall had the tail but not the tongue |

Yes, but they were mostly near-humans with baseline human stats that only looked different than Earth humans. There were also a few original PC species that were co-created by the player and I, and after play began the player added more details to the species. _________________ *

As a player i did. Made up a near human who's Mech was lower than standard human ave, but per was higher (+1 per/-2 mech), but had the capacity to shift it's vision like someone had a macrobinoculars. Prob was, while their site was shifted, they suffered a -3d penalty to seeing things when they were close (within 40m).. _________________ Confucious sayeth, don't wash cat while drunk! |
