What I mean to say, is where do those Jedi names come from? Do they signify anything?

I'm not sure about Ulic, but as for the hyphenated first names, I think that might be a native-born Coruscanti thing.
(Yeah, Stewjon might be the official homeworld of Obi-Wan Kenobi, but considering that that it was John Stewart who asked George Lucas what Obi-Wan's homeworld was, I suspect the Flanneled One was having a bit of fun at his expense, official answer or no.)

Qi-gong is Chinese for "life force," and jinn is Arabic for "genie" or "tutelary spirit."
I hear that in the 1930s there was a Club Obi-Wan in Shanghai, China.

His name is Ben. Obi-wan is a strange nickname.
It feels to me as if it is an earned title, somehow.
EDIT: I found this on the net. Don't know how canonical it is...

PFFT. Everyone knows that "Ben" or "Obi-Wan" are cover stories. He's actually OB-1, an early Kaminoan Clone, doped with midichlorians to infiltrate the Jedi Order.

An obi is a belt or sash worn in some Japanese traditional garments, including, I believe, in kendo.
Given the influence of jitai geki and chanbara on the OT, I think it's reasonable to expect that his name derives at least in part from that. Put another way, if Lucas was casting about for "vaguely Japanese-reminiscent names," it's reasonable that he'd, say, look at a samurai outfit and start looking at the words for the different components in it. Plus, "Hakama Kenobi" would be too on the nose.  |

I thought his name was obi wan, but his nickname after order 66 was ben
Where does it state they are both nicknames and he is undercover john doe? |
