Normally, we think of the action round in terms of -1D for every action after the first. But, we must remember that First Edition also has penalties that can apply to a combat round.
For example, let's say that your character is walking down a street in the business district of New Bazzle when a stormtrooper appears and begins firing at him.
We go into the declaration segment, where you say that you want your character to run in the opposite direction and fire twice at the trooper.
Normally, this is a scenario where the character is penalized -1D for taking an extra action during the round (because movement in 1E is never considered an action). He's got Blaster 5D +1, so he takes both shots at 4D +1.
But, the character ends up penalized -4D, taking only 1D +1 for each of the two blaster shots?
WHY?
First, the character decides to Dodge the stormtrooper's incoming fire. He does this at Full Dice, but any actions taken after the Dodge are penalized as extra actions.
The character's blaster is in his holster. The character has to draw it in order to use it. That's a penalty of -1D.
A running character is limited to 90 degree turns and is penalized -1D.
And, now the character is taking three actions--the Dodge and two Blaster shots--which means -2D to all actions.
Add that up, and that's -4D to both Blaster attacks.
In the end, the character Dodges, Draws, Runs, and fires twice. |

Your example really highlights the point that attempting too much with even above-average skill will probably result in wide-spread failure. You've got to have really exceptional skills, or burn a force point to do such a heroic/cinematic series of actions. |

This is where I feel D6 falls short, honestly. Always thought it was silly. We do -1D per action AFTER the first, such that the second action (only) is rolled at -1D, the third action (only) is at -2D, etc... |

What's silly?
If there is a declaration segment, then you know how many actions each character would take--thus, you know the penalty.
And, with reactions skills, it becomes a tactical decision. For example, if you plan on firing once and using a Reaction skill like Dodge, then you've got a decision to make.
You can roll your blaster attack at full dice, then roll your Dodge immediately afterward, but your Dodge will be at -1D.
Or, you can flip flop it, but rolling your Dodge at full dice, then rolling your single action blaster attack at -1D.
There are reasons for doing both. |
