This idea came up in another topic, but IMO, it deserves a topic of its own.
For those who haven't seen The Island, SPOILER: a group of clones are kept in an isolated environment, believing they exist in a post-apocalyptic world. At random times, a lottery system selects residents at random for retirement to "The Island", a paradise where they never have to work again.
The horrible truth is that these clones are actually being kept as living organ donors for the rich and famous out in the real world, and being chosen to go to The Island is really a cover for the selected clone to be culled and their organs harvested for transplant.
Consider the possibilities:-A cloning facility where clones of all the Empire's rich and powerful work, unknowingly waiting for the moment when their real-world counterpart needs a heart or liver or kidneys...
-A character background or adventure hook where one of the clones discovers the truth and escapes, and just so happens to be an exact genetic duplicate of Tarkin, Isard, Thrawn, Baron Fel, etc.
-This might also be an explanation for why cloned parts and organs haven't superseded cybernetics; cloned organs don't grow properly unless they incubate inside a fully functional living being.
Just wanted to get it written down before I fall asleep. Enjoy. _________________ "No set of rules can cover every situation. It's expected that you will make up new rules to suit the needs of your game." - The Star Wars Roleplaying Game, 2R&E, pg. 69, WEG, 1996.

Not familiar with the Island, but there's the book by Nancy Farmer, "House of the Scorpion", which follows a similar clone. _________________ "I've Seen Your Daily Routine. You Are Not Busy!"

I always thought it had more in common with the 1996 book "Spares", by M M Smith - but then again, harvesting organs isn't that rare a trope in sci fi at any rate.
You could also use serial reincarnation by way of technology, like in the Metal Hurlant short or any number of other sources - what if you had the opportunity to transfer your mind (or your brain) into a new body? And what if that body was improved, like in "Old Man's War" and so on in the series by J Scalzi? |

Good ideas. Maybe the Kaminoans and/or the Empire even had 'organ farm' clones to benefit experienced veteran clones who were wounded, to not lose their experience from the wars. If wounded rookie clones needed new organs, they probably would just let them die because they can just be easily replaced by the next fresh rookie clone. _________________ *

I'd say combine the two ideas, so that the wounded rookies ARE the organ farm. If they get wounded, they get put into suspended animation or something, and are told it's to stabilize them for transport to the medical facility for treatment. But instead, they are kept on ice until a wounded veteran needs one of their parts.
Horrific, but efficient. Very Imperial. _________________ "No set of rules can cover every situation. It's expected that you will make up new rules to suit the needs of your game." - The Star Wars Roleplaying Game, 2R&E, pg. 69, WEG, 1996.

I loved that movie. And imo it would make for a great plotline for a SW adventure.. _________________ Confucious sayeth, don't wash cat while drunk! |

(An aside: The people who made The Island were successfully sued by another production company for all but stealing the plot of a 70s film called Parts: The Clonus Horror. That film... ended up on Mystery Science Theater 3000, if it gives you any indication how bad it is.) |
