Reading Ning Leihrec's thread about streamlining Imperial Military Forces prompted me to share some of this from my game;
During this campaign, the players were Jedi during the opening portion of the Clone Wars. I had each of them choose a Corps out of several types;
Fleet Security Corps
Sky corps
Assault Corps
Armor Corps
Recon Corps
Attack Corps
Star Corps (aka Galactic Marines)
or
Siege Corps
Each corps had a list of different types of units that could be fielded in battle under the player's command.
Ground battles were handled with a miniatures rule system I had written with a game company (that was ultimately never published).
Space battles were handled with a miniatures rules system by that company (that I had no hand in designing, but that got published and is fairly successful; though I altered it significantly for my own use.)
One player ended up in command of
Quote: |
The 72nd Sky Corps; (aka 'The Dirty Mynocks')
which is kind of a space-superiority 'air force.'
1st Legion:
Starfighters
Composed of
-3 Wings of V-19 Torrents (216 total fighters)
-1 Wing of D-7 interceptors (72 total interceptors)
2nd Legion:
Starfighters
-3 Wings of V-19 Torrents (216 total fighters)
-1 Wing of D-7 interceptors (72 total interceptors)
3rd Legion:
Attack
Composed of
-1 Wing of V-19 Torrents (72 total fighters)
-1 Wing of WZ-1 Bombers ( 36 total strike bombers)
-1 Wing of LAAT Gunships (40 total gunships)
-1 Jump Regiment (1,152 total jet troopers in 192 squads)
4th Legion:
Combat Support
-1 Flotilla of Assault Gunboats (40 total gunboats)
-1 Wing of LAAT/c Carriers (40 total carriers)
-2 Wings of LAAT Transports (80 total transports)
-1 Troop of Fwd Air Controller Commandos (20 total commandos, in 5 squads)
Naval Units:
Acclamator I Fighter Carrier Variant x4
‘Impetuous’, ‘Raptor’, ‘Cowl’, and ‘Gripper’

How did this work out in RP?
That would be daunting for me, as a player. |

That orbat is mostly for player knowledge of what their characters are in charge of. As recently knighted jedi, it was supposed to be equal parts daunting and exhilarating.
In actual play, when the players were given a combat mission, ie to attack a separatist base on a planet, they were given 3000points each to 'buy' their force. ( a few more bonus points for a good military strategy roll)
In the miniatures game, every element had a point cost. The Corps they command determines what units they have access to, and if the corps has a lot of a type of unit, there is a point cost discount when selecting.
In play, the board got set up, and the players were in charge of their little task force; with the off-screen understanding that it was a zoomed-in representation of a larger, potentially planet-wide battle.
The casualties were representative; ie if the players had a gunship destroyed, it was assumed that the Corps had lost 10 or more, depending on the scale of the battle. |
