Now that is an insightful look into playing the character. It makes a lot of sense. It's also that amount of thought into a character that had so little screen time that makes him so wonderfully quoteable.

Thre's also something in the RotJ novelization that involves Palpatine musing a bit to himself about how "friendship" is a completely different thing from the perspective of the dark side of the Force. I'd quote it here, but I misplaced the book.

I found the passage in the RotJ novlization I was posting about earlier. It turns out I was misremembering it: It was Vader during the duel on the second Death Star musing about the nature of friendship in the dark side, not Palpatine:

I expect that Vader was referring to his relationship with the Emperor in those last sentences. It's not like Vader had any sort of personal relationship with anyone else besides the Emperor after he became Sidious' apprentice.
