In Mario Puzo's Godfather, Vito Corleone was portrayed as an incredibly powerful and ruthless mob boss, but a main part of personality (and the reason for his success) was that he was so reasonable, and that he took such good care of his subordinates that he inspired incredible loyalty in them. He managed the neat trick of being both loved and feared, and his "offers that could not be refused" were always preceded by an offer that was more than generous.
Now, Hutts are often portrayed as egomaniacal, sadistic jerks. Has anyone ever used a Hutt who was reasonable, respected, and who managed to inspire fierce loyalty in his underlings? _________________ "No set of rules can cover every situation. The closest I can think of in the old EU would be Talon Karrde. He's not a Hutt, but he does inspire loyalty in his underlings. You might also include Prince Xizor, but that's a point that's more arguable. |

Yes. I have a Hutt clan leader who is widely regarded as a benevolent leader. (The other Hutts in his family vary from good to bad.) He opposes slavery and offers emancipation, sanctuary and jobs to any escaped slaves of other Hutts. His clan has an entire population of Klatooinians serving in the non-leadership aspects of their society and are generally happy. Of course this radical Hutt leader and his clan are completely exiled from the greater Hutt society and despised as unnatural deviants. _________________ *

Not a Hutt,
but I do have an NPC bookie / loanshark that is personable, respectful, projects an image of genuine concern for beings, and it really bothers him that he has to set goons after defaulters; but he's firm and fair; he's got a business and a rep to think of after all.
My PCs owe him some not-insignificant credits...but they like him enough that they really WANT to clear the debt; not just because they'll be hounded if they don't.
It's atypical to the stereotype of such a character; which makes him interesting to portray. |

I've had it work, sorta.
Many moons ago, we had a PC who was effectively the capo of his planet, in service of a Hutt. He was very personally loyal to the Hutt, because the Hutt gave him access and power, and he, in turn, inspired loyalty in many under him. They weren't terribly loyal to the Hutt, per se, but he was. _________________ "I've Seen Your Daily Routine. You Are Not Busy!"
