What do you think of their approach?
Quote: | West End Games didn’t want single-biome worlds (they cited Hoth and Tatooine as “extremes”), or planets with a single civilization surrounded by desolate wilderness, but fleshed out, realistic depictions of societies and environments rarely seen in the movies. |
I dunno, to me, these things are space opera genre conventions because they make for vivid and exciting stories. It’s not clear to me the value of abandoning them in favor of some sort of realism. It would seem more obvious to me that a Star Wars RPG ought to feature good versus evil since that’s what is featured in Star Wars the movie(s), but instead they seem almost hostile to the movies and want to build a different kind of universe and tell a different kind of story. Maybe I’m reading too much into it. |

The Stylebook itself isn't posted in full on the io9 site, is it? Just excerpts, right? Anyone ever come across a complete copy? |

Believe me, if I'd found a copy, you'd know. _________________ __________________________________
Before we take any of this too seriously, just remember that in the middle episode a little rubber puppet moves a spaceship with his mind. |

That group from WEG definitely had some talented writers. |

Imagine what they were up against though.
Many submissions would probably be rehash after rehash of exactly what you saw on screen.
In the same way a GM might have to tell neophyte players that not all smugglers are like Han Solo and that they don't all have Wookiees as co-pilots.
I think it was about encouraging new writers to push the boundaries a bit so that you don't end up with the same thing.
When I was a kid, the winter after ESB had come out, we fought the Battle of Hoth on the snow-covered playground every. single. recess.
I wish someone had ingrained the idea in our little heads that you could do more with Star Wars roleplay. |

Yeah, with the RPG being 7 years old they were probably at that point trying to find new things to do with the universe. |
