When an animal is being rode or otherwise instructed to do something. As well as when it has a chance to get spooked while being rode or performing a task.
They roll their Orneriness versus beast handling/riding
Examples of what the beast does when the pc's fail this roll are in the core rulebook 2nd edition R&E - page 49.
Note that Orneriness is a facet of interaction between players and what is classified as another character (NPC) by all other rules.
As such we often houserule that beast handling (not beast riding) is what is used to calm creatures and is a perception skill.
Also these rules apply to trained animals only - or friendly animals - and should not be used for interactions between characters and wild animals with the hopes of making a wild rancor your best friend.
We apply a modifier of +1D to +3D to the Orneriness code of any wild animal such antics are attempted with, depending on the nature of the animal.
1D to Curious/Friendly/Oblivious Creatures
2D to Cautious/Unfriendly
3D to Frightened/Hostile
Welcome to the world of Beasts! .......... be prepared for headaches. |

There's also the Animal Restraining Bolt on p. 47 of Cracken's Rebel Field Guide and the Beast Languages power, which subtracts 2D from the animal's orneriness code.
Note: Prior to waking sleeping GMs, it is advisable to dart them with Prozac or another mild calming sedaive. _________________ Aha! |

Or to distract them with cookies, good Irish cheese or whiskey. |
Or all of the above just to make sure. |
