I could have sworn i posted a thread on this a few days ago but i am not seeing it anywhere.. So here goes again.
Who has ever had a game where these devices made an appearance, even if only in the backround?
Has anyone tried to come up with rules for
how they operate
How far one can travel with them
How long they stay active?? _________________ Confucious sayeth, don't wash cat while drunk! |

Gree hypergates ?
Closest thing I have heard about something like that is the gate that exploded causing the Kathol rift, that you learn about in endgame the last book in the Dark Stryder campaign.
Or at lest that is with a name like hypergate. |

It wasn't a thread but you did post the below in the Non-Standard Sublight Drives thread: http://www.rancorpit.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=158031#158031
garhkal wrote: | As was mentioned in the 'starwars-stargate crossover' thread the ancient Gree DID have a network of hypergates that would only operate for them.
Has anyone ever used them in game, even if only as a backdrop piece of history?
Ever had players TRY to solve their use? |
I had also made the mistake of missing the "sublight" part of that subject at first. It is probably best that this got its own thread. _________________ *

I used a Gree hypergate in a SAGA campaign. The GM wanted to take a break for a few sessions, so he asked if I could do something that was a side quest. So, I had the NPCS follow after an independent team of archeologists who were sent by the New Republic to investigate some sith ruins. (Jedi were kept out of the mission for extrinsic reasons that had to do with tensions between the New Republic and the Jedi Order in the campaign.)
The party arrived to find the strange ruins, but no sign of the team. The Republic botched the research and it turns out that it definitely wasn't Sith. But the party didn't know what kind of ruins they were. When the archeologists discovered the hypergate, the team had apparently accidentally activated it and left it on a loop, teleporting whoever was on the pad every 12 hours.
They wound up two galaxies away in a declining Gree colony. It was grand. _________________ __________________________________

I had a damaged one found in one of my campaigns - one of my PC's actually succeeded in repairing it - only for it to sap an entire ghtroc freighters energy reserves and activate only long enough to activate and shunt the PC and his droid off to an unknown destination as the other PC's watched - including the PC's spouse.
The PC was pulled in before his comrades cut the power, they never did find out what exactly happened as they were too scared to attempt an expedition through - they did reactivate it only for it to take all the power from a capital scale generator and remain open for only 2 minutes before starting to damage the gate itself as pieces began to break off and be pulled in.
Rather unexpectedly at the very end of that campaign years later as we were "rolling credits" I had the PC's spouse receive a message through hypercomm - "I love You" was it all it said - the message's origin point was a comm station just outside the Rishii Maze and it's send date was listed as a delayed return logged from over 100yrs in the past.
I also had one found at the end of a campaign in Gree space by an HK Droid who found a Gree Engineer in Cryo Stasis - as he turned on the facilities power to begin defrost - 3 hypergates turned on and a nearby instrument panel listed the number of objects in transit as over 2,000 as suddenly a monstrous beast of unknown origin spilled through one of them. That was where he ended - I still love that droid players sense of suspense. |

Nice ending! So the Gree could time travel? If so you'd think they could have prevented their demise.

We may never know... In reality I always saw the gree's tampering with things the reason why they rejected their engineering caste - but they had become too reliant on so that is why their society was in steady decline.

You could say that - a mass of tentacles and teeth. |

I pictured the Gree decline as one of apathy and dwindling numbers of those willing to put in the time and effort to understand how their tech worked, coupled with their rigid caste system and grandmasters who jealously guarded their secrets, sometimes all the way to the grave.
But time travel works too. _________________ Aha! |
