I am writing a narrative for my gaming group where the moff's messenger boy is giving him bad news. You know the trope I am talking about: "E-Excuse me, sir, but -" "God dammit. What is it this time, Perkins?" "Well, y-you see, the, um, Rebels... They destroyed the Death Star."

So my question is what rank and title would that messenger boy have?

The first thing that comes to my mind is adjutant, but I really know nothing about these things.

Adjutant sounds right, from Wikipedia:

In various uniformed hierarchies, the term is used for number of functions, but generally as a principal aide to a commanding officer.

Adjutant is a military rank or appointment. In some armies, including most English-speaking ones, it is an officer who assists a more senior officer, while in other armies, especially Francophone ones, it is an NCO (non-commissioned officer), normally corresponding roughly to a staff sergeant or warrant officer.

Try aide in addition to adjutant.

I use adjutant as the title of the aide of an Admiral villian in my games, but since it's a Moff/Govenor I would use assistant or aide. Chief of staff perhaps?

If you use the real world as a template you could just go with Executive Assistant to the Moff (Governor), Chief of Staff, Executive Assistant or Special Assistant to the Moff (Governor) might work. Depending on what the messenger boy's position you might even give him/her a special title just for the setting like Director of the Board of Hypherspace Lane Maintenance. It's really whatever your imagination can come up with but I hope this helps some.

Peace
