I'm thinking of revising pickpocket and changing it to Sleight-of-Hand or Manipulation, if you prefer one word. This skill is used to pick a pocket, perform sleight-of-hand feats, picking a lock, or doing anything else that requires a steady hand and coordination. It's specialties would be Lockpick, Pickpocket and Prestidigitation.
Lockpick is used to open physical locks and usually is assisted with tools. Example locks include doors, safes, vehicles and handcuffs. Electronic or computer assisted locks would require the security skill.
Pickpocket is as the RAW.
Prestidigitation, also known as stage magic, is used to slip small objects out of sight. Such items might include a coin, playing card or anything that could fit in the palm. This, like pickpocket, is opposed by Perception.
Any thoughts? Has anyone already done something like this? _________________ "This job is 90% talking to people and 10% shooting at them." |

I suggested something similar a while back, but you've already gone into more detail than I ever did. I like what I see, and the only thing I would suggest is allowing Lockpicking at increased difficulty if using improvised tools. As far as the name, I went with Sleight-of-Hand. _________________ "No set of rules can cover every situation. I would think lock picking could fall under security, or its own TECHNICAL SKILL. _________________ "EXECUTE ORDER 67. Wait a minute, that doesn't sound like order 67..... No, wait. Yes, yes it does. EXECUTE ORDER 68" Palpatine's last moments - robot chicken. |

I like it as a Dex skill. Locksmithing (i.e. Disassembling, repairing and or building a physical lock) would certainly be a Tech skill, but the mechanics of manipulating a lock with a pick or some improvised tool are much more dependent on manual dexterity and feeling your way through the lock than a knowledge of how to disassemble and repair it. _________________ "No set of rules can cover every situation. Good point. I would go with that. _________________ "EXECUTE ORDER 67. Wait a minute, that doesn't sound like order 67..... No, wait. Yes, yes it does. EXECUTE ORDER 68" Palpatine's last moments - robot chicken. |

Perhaps there should be a fourth specialization for escape artist, used to break out of physical bonds... _________________ "No set of rules can cover every situation. I like that idea.

I didn't want to go into too much detail when I originally posted in case someone here had the same idea. I think that a modifier to the difficulty is appropriate for using make-shift tools. _________________ "This job is 90% talking to people and 10% shooting at them." |

I'm with you Lane. A while back I took the queue from D6 and changed the name of Pick Pocket to Sleight of Hand to better represent all aspects of Sleight of Hand. Mine is still a Dexterity skill too. The lock picking aspect is only applicable to simple, mechanical, non-computerized locks, or what they would call in Star Wars "archaic locks". Security is still a Technical skill and still used for the higher tech, electronic, computerized locks. _________________ *

For lock picking, do you have modifiers listed for if they have tools, proper tools, no tools etc? _________________ Confucious sayeth, don't wash cat while drunk! |

I also changed Pick Pocket to Sleight of Hand, here's definition from my HRs:
Sleight of Hand (DEX)
Nimbleness with the fingers, including picking pockets, palming items, and opening mechanical locks.
Specializations: pick pocket, palming, lock picking, card tricks etc. |

I would say that their would be no modifier if the character used tools. If they used the proper tools, such as a lockpicking kit I would give the player +1D like anyother techskill. With improvised tools I would use GM judgment given the situation and the "tools" at hand. (ex: a hairpin +5, wire and screwdriver +2) As for no tools... I hesitate to say that it couldn't be done. I would leave that to the GM to decide. I would hope that the player could come up with a really good reason why he should be able to. _________________ "This job is 90% talking to people and 10% shooting at them." |

I was thinking of say like adnd has it.
No tools, you get a penalty
Base tools, you get the roll at no bonus/penalties
better tools give a boost. _________________ Confucious sayeth, don't wash cat while drunk! |

I've started to use the revised pickpocket rules. I'll keep you guys posted on how it turns out. _________________ "This job is 90% talking to people and 10% shooting at them." |

I'm just curious, have you ever used a lock picking set? _________________ __________________________________
