Another one brought out from the Darth omega advantages and disadvantages thread.
In the R&E book, tracking is listed as a specialty for Search, while many feel it should be a Survival specialty.
SO here is the poll to end it all. _________________ Confucious sayeth, don't wash cat while drunk! |

How about neither and making it an advanced skill. Other places I've simmed with have had 5d search as a minimu requirement (Thats why I vote for search) _________________ Gavin Storm

My first instinct is to go with Search. Survival doesn't seem like the best fit. _________________ "No set of rules can cover every situation. It's expected that you will make up new rules to suit the needs of your game." - The Star Wars Roleplaying Game, 2R&E, pg. 69, WEG, 1996.

I have a Fork-in rule which comes from the Burning Wheel system. Basically, if you have a skill test where another skill you have trained may be relevant, you may "fork in" 1D from that skill into your role.
So in this case, the character will make a Search role, and may fork in 1D from Survival. _________________ "I still wouldn't have a roll for it - but that's just how I roll." |

I had a similar idea in mind where Knowledge skills could be used as a kind of Non-FS Enhance Attribute. Like yours, a successful roll on a pertinent Knowledge skill resulted in a bonus that scaled up depending on how well you rolled or a penalty if you rolled badly (and if you chose to try for the Knowledge roll bonus, you had to take the resulting bonus/penalty). You could also stack multiple Knowledge skill rolls in a round with a reduced penalty (I figured that if a character was racking his brain for information on a particular subject, it wasn't the same degree of difficulty as most standard actions that would merit a MAP). _________________ "No set of rules can cover every situation. I personally have seen systems in which tracking is a specialty of Perception/Observation/Search (as in skills), and others where it is a specialty of Survival (due to the fact that you usually use it in wilderness environments. Let's face it, you aren't visually tracking anything on concrete), and yet other systems has it as its own skill.
That's why I voted Both. _________________ Knowledge is power, and power corrupts...so what does that say about knowledge?

I voted just Search, as that matches the RAW, though Survival makes sense to me, too.
I could see getting a 'synergy' bonus from a related skill. I think I'm going to add that to my game, as a matter of fact. _________________ Currently Running: Villains & Vigilantes (a 32-year-old campaign with multiple groups) and D6 Star Wars; mostly on hiatus are Adventures in Middle-earth and Delta Green |

One idea I had was to give a +1 mod. for every D they had in survival. For example: A player in my group is playing a Galactic Big Game Hunter. Her Survival is 5D and she specializes in Jungle 6D. She has a search of 5D and a Tracking of 6D. So if she tracks in the forest or desert she would get a +5 to her tracking roll and if it were the jungle it would be +6. _________________ "This job is 90% talking to people and 10% shooting at them." |
