Just thought I'd start a post on the Star Wars Rebel cartoon series, given all the recent news coming out of New York Comic Con, and from the official Star Wars website, this weekend. I think the material that comes out of this series could be rich for use in d6 campaigns.

Here's the post from yesterday at starwars.com, discussing the news from NYCC, including the introduction of a new nemesis - the Imperial Inquisitor:

http://starwars.com/news/nycc-2013-meet-the-inquisitor-the-new-face-of-evil-in-star-wars-rebels.html

If I'm not mistaken, the idea of inquisitors was first introduced in the original Star Wars Sourcebook by WEG.

There's also mention of a new Imperial vehicle, the All Terrain Defense Pod (AT-DP) - which looks like an early version of the AT-ST. They will also be using the Imperial Troop Transport, created as a toy by Kenner.

In addition to the post at starwars.com, and the associated video there, there's also coverage from the event itself on YouTube (these are in 4 parts):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BiX9kHmd64o
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lmgyaa70YFQ

I know this cartoon series is going to be aimed for a younger audience, but I'm excited by the potential new material that will be introduced. The heavy influence of Ralph McQuarrie is also a very welcome sight.

Insert sound of crickets here. Smile Looks like I shouldn't have wasted a post on this. Ah well - I'm looking forward to the show.

I'm looking forward to the show too.

I'll start thinking about stat material once I see more of it.

Yeah, I think it will be interesting to see how it plays into the whole scheme of Star Wars. I'm also interested to see how FFG handles incorporating an active series into their products.

This show seems like the salvaging of the live-action series idea for animation. I don't have high hopes for it based on the overall horrible Clone Wars series.

The animation needs to be much more realistic - No more wooden beards and cartoony knobby noses. When showing a character from the films, they need to make the character's look based on how s/he appeared in the films. Is that too much to ask? I don't think so.

I'm even less hopeful Rebels will adhere to film canon. If Lucas himself (in his leadership of The Clone Wars) could contradict his own film canon within only a few years after completing his films, what's to stop Disneyfilm from likewise disregarding the films?

For this show to have a chance at being good for me, they have to correct these things. And don't include Asucka!

You know, Whill, I don't think I could agree more (though I don't really have any opinion on "Asucka", as I don't really even know who that is; is she an apprentice of Anakin or something?)

I'm glad somebody has finally said this. If you travelled back in time and met the young 'me' in 1977, you'd have met one of the biggest fans of this franchise ever! My life and thoughts were consumed with this epic, incredible movie! If that time traveller had bet that young man that somebody he would not watch a TV series (as well as a movie in theaters based on it) about Star Wars - and the Clone Wars at that (we spent countless hours talking about the Clone Wars based on just a few snippets of dialogue) - I think that kid would have laughed in your face and taken that bet, no matter the amount.

But here we are almost four decades later, and there's been countless hours of that show. And deep down a part of me wants to like it. But then I stop and watch a minute or two of it, sometimes when channel surfing, and I feel myself vomiting in my mouth. My eyes burn and I get hit by waves of nausea, and I feel as if I've been hit by food poisoning! OK, that's a slight exaggeration, but I can't bring myself to even watch an entire episode. The art is so horrid and ridiculous, and so doesn't resemble the Star Wars that I know and love, that I can't stomach it. The graphics are so bad that they often look like they were done by third graders drawing with their off hands. And the anime/manga influences means that they not only look "cartoony" (sometimes I really even like cartoony), but all out of proportion, distorted, and ridiculous. Add in video game elements of ridiculousness as well (Mace Windu using the Force to pull a Star Destroyer from orbit, for example) that blatantly contradicts the universe I've come to cherish, and the final result from me is an F-. Unwatchable, disturbing, and an abomination that damages the brand.

As you can tell, I'm a big fan! Wink

Thank you, Doug. I agree that the show is an abomination.

And yes, Asucka is Anakin's Padawan that he was assigned about a month after Attack of the Clones takes place. Even though it makes a lot more sense with respect to the films that Anakin only became a Jedi Knight in the final year of the war. And in Revenge, Anakin was still too whiny and immature to even be a Jedi Knight, much less a master to his own Padawan. It makes a lot more sense that the reason Anakin was even promoted to Knight at all was because of his incredible abilities and heroism, as more of a PR move to help keep the troops inspired.

In fact, Obi-Wan may not have been the best master to a Padawan but he would been a much better choice than Anakin! Maybe by the final year of the war, they've lost enough Knights that they have a surplus of Padawans in need of a master. One way to free up some masters would be to promote their existing Padawans to knighthood, which could have been another factor in Anakin's promotion to Knight - to free up Obi-Wan to be assigned his second Padawan.

But give Whinakin his own Padawan? Besides The Clone Wars series being ridiculous in many ways, the whole premise of the show is inherently flawed (and sadly it was Lucas' post-film-series idea). I get that a lot of people hate the prequels, but what totally boggles my mind is all the love for this horrible, ridiculous show.

I pray Rebels is better but remain skeptical.

I feel a need to weigh in here a bit, just to put up a little of a defense for The Clone Wars.

First, I was also disappointed - although not that surprised - by The Clone Wars in general. The wooden animation style didn't work for me either, and the stories often didn't feel very true to the OT. However, the main thing I really liked about it were some of the real-life people involved with the show - folks like James Arnold Taylor, Ashley Eckstein, and Tom Kane seem like top-notch people who really cared about their characters and put a lot of effort into things. If you ever get a chance to hear some of their interviews on programs like Rebel Force Radio, I think you might be impressed with the actors themselves.

And I'll also disagree a little with Ahsoka. Yes, I couldn't stand her at first, and she was annoying. But as the series went on she did mature, and just as Luke became less whiny, she did as well. I know that part of this may be due to the fact that I like Ashley Eckstein, the actress that voiced her, but I do think - if you never saw some of the later episodes with her in it - you might have an incomplete representation of the character. By the end of the series, I have to say that I did like her character.

That said, I also had a hard time enjoying many of the episodes. I know they were made more for a younger audience, but I think it's one of the big misconceptions out there among the entertainment business that you have to dumb things down for younger people to like them. I loved TESB like crazy when I was 7 - in part because of its complexity and more mature tone. Dave Filoni, who will now also be involved with producing the new Rebels cartoon, seems like a nice guy who is genuinely interested in the franchise, and has had a lot of direct interaction with Lucas. I just hope that they get some good writers for the new show, and don't make the mistake of dumbing things down.
