This isn't exactly a GM question but I'm not sure if there's a better place for it here.

I've got a bunch of scattered notes for my SW campaign, and I've thought of putting them in blog format to manage them. Assuming I don't use licensed art, and it's clearly in the nature of fan-fiction type of writing, is LFL and the rest of the vampire squid likely to swoop?

If there's a recent fan-fic type statement from them anyone could link that would be great. I could keep the blog "private", but I'd just as soon share it so that others could make use of it.

Thanks all.

Fan produced material is almost exclusively ignored by license holders, unless you derive profit from it. Lots of fan fic authors generally include disclaimers with their work to help cover themselves from any potential legal attention, as well.

No, unless you're using copyrighted material directly, it falls under fair use. (Given that it's not for profit, as mentioned)

Thanks, I had thought that LFL had been more aggressive about this than others, but if that's not true it's good news.

The guys are right. Intellectual property laws are really about anything profit related, including advertising but for the most part not including blogs and blogged fanfic. Well known authors have even published material inspired directly by SWU but aren't a direct transcript of any creative material (eg. Margaret Weiss' bloodsword trilogy, which is a reimagining of the star wars story and Luke et al).

If you're a writer seeking to publish straight fanfic, the writers guidelines from LucasArts are pretty detailed, the application process for their waiver is pretty strict. They review any fanfic authors who want to publish fanfic for their existing publications and if they like your style then they give the green light, where most publishing houses review based on an example of the proposed work you have for them. LucasArts won't even accept unsolicited manuscripts, at all. You must be published and they must like your work or you get a flat refusal.

Anything remotely profit related they will chase down with a team of lawyers and sue. But in this they're no different to the music industry, LucasArts/LFL are a large corporation now so they function more like a large corporate body does and they can be pretty annoying for mere human beings to deal with, they have all the issues associated with it including a maxim of profit before common sense. That's just the corporate world.
In that sense they're a bit anal.

Well, that goes to damages more than infringement, but it does affect most reasonable company's actions.

Thanks for that, I'm not really heading that way but it's interesting to know these things. In any case I won't ever read enough of their EU stuff to get close to that Smile
