Once you have Control, Sense or Alter, are there any set in stone, by the book rules for how long it takes to learn a new power? For example, you get Control at 1D and Concentration...a couple of weeks later Master Lenshelhow apallapenny decides its time for you to learn Control Pain...how long does that training time take?

Has this been covered in the books and if so where??

Training time is linked to Force skill progression. You can learn a new power when you improve the related skill one pip with a teacher. Those powers that require multiple skills require that you improve all corresponding skills one pip to learn the power.

Do you need a reference for Force skill improvement time tables?

In the blue cover book it does mention when learning a force power NOT at the same time as raising an force skill (or learning a power your master does not have) it takes 5cp and 1 week.

Training cost is still 5 CPs and 1 week in the revised edition, but I am not seeing a time to learn. From page 141.
Quote:
Learning Powers. When a character first learns a
Force skill, the teacher also teaches one Force power
pertaining to that skill.

A character may be taught a new power each time
a Force skill is improved one pip.

A character may be taught a Force power without
improving a Force skill, but the character must spend
five Character Points.

A power that uses two skills — control and sense —
counts as two powers when being taught powers.

If you use the 1 week training time, then since training time can be reduced for learning Force skills, it can probably also be reduced for learning Force Powers without increasing Force skills. Per page 140-141 of the R&E rules
Quote:
Training time may be reduced by one day for each
additional Character Point spent (minimum of one day).

I honestly would love to know how many even USE that training time/reduction for additional CP rule?

It only makes sense if
  1. you are strictly enforcing the untrained costs and the character knows how much time training takes and how long they have between adventures to train with their master. In some cases it will then cost fewer CPs decrease the training time by spending CPs to decrease the duration since all the training will then occur with a master.
  2. there is a clock ticking and you know your character needs the extra skill point or more likely needs the new skilll obtained from training up the skill.
  3. if you assume George handed out CPs like Skittles to Mark's character then having Luke spend extra CPs for his time with OB1 and Yoda helps decrease the needed training time - though probably still not enough. Similar arguments probably hold for Ewen's and Christian's characters in George's second campaign.

We don't use the time decrease rule, but then we are both more strict with learning Force skills and powers since training and learning of skills only ever occurred with both GM and player approval and both could and did veto an increase if they didn't feel that the improvement was appropriate for a PC to learn a new skill or power at that time. And more liberal in the sense that since the time element was a bit superfluous as a limit we sometimes didn't bother to calculate it for learning of Force skills or normal skills.
