D6 open system?

Since my native tongue aint English I don't always understand juridical terminology, so I thought that perhaps there's someone in this forum who can explain the "open system" concept to me.

The question I have concerning it is:

I have created a complete RPG world, using the D6 system. It has nothing to do with Star Wars, it is a comedy game revolving around ninjas and samurais. Am I allowed to publish and sell it?

I'm no intellectual property lawyer, but I'll give my best guess.

I'd say that either you could try and sell it, but if someone simply copied it for and started using it for themselves, you wouldn't have a case against them, or more likely, you can't sell it, but you and anyone else can use it for free.

Long and short of it is you would probably need to make some fairly foundational changes to the system to make it "yours" before you can sell it.

My understanding was that the game system itself (i.e. the D6 system as a whole) is now available for public use, in that you can design your own universe / special rules / items / etc., and that you could copyright your own original ideas, but the gaming system itself is not your property, and can't be copyrighted. Anyone else may use the D6 system to make their own game rules, but it is only considered an infringement of copyright law if you have copyrighted your own original ideas and someone else has copied those ideas and profited from them without your consent.

Right. You CAN publish your game using your original setting and the D6 system and sell it for personal profit. Some publishers have done so already! You can copyright your setting material as your own IP. For the game rules you can make changes or use the free OpenD6 PDFs verbatim if you wish. I suggest visiting the last officially sanctioned WEG fan forum (current home of the OpenD6 community): D6 Online
